I had an interesting experience with trying to buy a refurbished lens from Nikon during their 10% off refurbished sale. Since the lens I wanted was expensive and hard to find refurbished, I called Nikon to place an order on Friday morning (the first day of their four day sale). I got an email acknowledging my purchase.
Later in the day, I got an e-mail saying that my order had been cancelled (with no explanation given). My initial thought was that their website did not correctly reflect their actual stock (i.e., perhaps the lens I wanted was no longer available). So, I called Nikon again, asking what happened. I was not given a clear answer. I asked if I could get my order restored. They said yes, but that I would have to wait until Monday for someone to get back to me. Since I was concerned that the lens might not be available on Monday, I asked to speak to a supervisor. I had to ask to speak to a supervisor twice, before finally being transferred. The supervisor eventually told me that the original Nikon salesperson had put their own personal e-mail address in one of the order fields. Sounds strange, but I went back into my original e-mail receipt and found that that was exactly what had happened. I am not sure why they could not have just fixed this, without troubling me, but whatever. The supervisor offered to place my order again, with no delay. I placed the order again, and got an email acknowledging my purchase.
On Monday morning, I got an e-mail saying that my second order had been cancelled (with no explanation given). I checked my credit card provider to ensure that the purchase had been approved, and it had been (both times). I went back to the Nikon website to see if the lens was still available, and it appeared to be. At that point, I logged into B&H and ordered the lens new. I had it three days later.
While I had successfully ordered two refurbished items (a lens and a TC) from Nikon in the past, I will not even try in the future.
