I hope to shoot the Solar Eclipse in August using the 500II and 70-200, 2 cameras and tripod setups. Any recommendations on filters, I read that the drop in for the 500 is a no no because it's to far past the front elements. Any recommendations? What are you all going to use? Thanks in advance, Mike.

You must place the filter at the front of the lens. Anywhere else will permanently damage your eyesight and your camera upon viewing the sun.

Use only filters designed specifically for solar viewing/imaging. Do not attempt to use strong photographic ND filters as they may not reduce all light wavelengths to safe levels.

There are glass and polymer film solar filters. Both are available in slip-on housings and threaded filters. The films are also available in sheets that can be cut to make DIY filters.

I have a film filter I built for the 2012 annular eclipse. I may use that again or upgrade to the 4.57" glass filter from Orion.

Practice. Every silly thing you can't imagine can go wrong and you won't have time to fix it. Practice.

For my 600mm II, I purchased a
Baader ASTF 140 AstroSolar Telescope Solar Filter - 140 mm - ASTF-140
From Highpoint Scientific. I use the 20mm bolt in the inner slots.

You'd have to check the specs on the filter relative to the outer diameter of your lens to find the right size. Here is the spec sheet.
Determine the maximum O.D. of your lens (not the glass but the lens body) without the hood. Then look at the baader table(s), go to the column "outer tube diameter" and find the largest filter that will fit your lens O.D.

I have a 48 inch Sony. That is all the telescope I will need. Using the feed from Discovery Science, I am risking neither my sight nor my gear to see it.

The simple way is a sheet of mylar filter from Thousand Oaks (ten bucks, tops). It's cheap and easy - you don't even have to care if there are wrinkles in it - it doesn't affect he image. This is a simple ND sort of filter - all the light is cut down. If there are sunspots, you'll see those but that is all the detail you'll see on the sun.

More (lots more) expensive is the Hydrogen-Alpha (solar) filter, which is closer to the traditional screw-on filters you're used to. This will show all kinds of detail depending on the filter and how it is set up. Flares, prominences, grains. Will also require some extra practice and experience.

Depends how much IQ you need. The thousand oaks mylar sheets don't have as nice an IQ as the baader.
Great for binocs.
Just depends on what you want/need.

Check Highpoint Scientific for the premade baader astrosolar filters (with frames). Several sizes are still available.
