There is a slight feeling of a detent when it is turned all the way to tight.
Can you pull the lens or turn the zoom ring at all, when yours is tight, or do you find it to be truly locked?
Kim,
The friction ring won't provide a true "lock", just progressively more or less resistance to turning the zoom ring. Assuming Sony has used a similar mechanism as Canon has in the EF 100-400 II, the detents you notice at the ends of the range of the friction ring are probably spring clips that simply hold the friction ring at the ends and do not provide actual resistance. I haven't seen a tear down of the Sony 100-400 yet, but hopefully they aren't using ball bearings and friction pads that can wear down over time like the old Canon 100-400 did. Regardless, I think that with a lens that is still relatively new and under warranty, I'd just send it in for service.
