A couple of comments.
1. In all configurations, I am not sure I would consider this to be a handheld lens. It is a bit heavy for my taste, but I am nearly 70. Younger folks may feel differently. For all of the pictures, I used a red pod to stabilize the camera.
2. Focus seemed to search a bit in the in the full mode, but was quick in the infinity-3m mode.
3. When confronted with seedheads on tall grasses with the 2x adaptor on, the focus seemed to flutter for a second or so before locking on,
4. For the couple of action pictures, I used continuous focus (AF-C) and focus priority.
5. The zoom stiffness ring if set to stiff causes some motion at the camera body which can prevent the autofocus from working.
Formal lens testing I will leave that to the likes of DxO. I prefer to see how a lens performs in my typical shoot mode. In the 100-400mm use, I find the lens to be quite good and certainly as good as the 70-200 f4 Sony lens and perhaps a bit better. And to get a 400mm reach is really nice. For the 2x adaptor configuration, I am not quite sure how I feel. I have no basis of comparison, but I suppose if I really needed a long reach on bright days, the 2x is pretty inexpensive choice.

Don't expect fast/accurate focus at the long end with the A7rii and 2x, in that autofocus is contrast autofocus only. Only the 1,4x/A7rii will use phase detection at the long end. The A9 can use phase detection wide open with the 2x and 800mm.
I should mention that with the 1,4x/A7rii image quality improves at 560mm when stopped down one stop from open, If only the soccer players would freeze for a moment.
