I think it's like a rule . You buy this lens you have to shoot the moon. Lol

Used the a7rii tonight and only got 10-15 % that were acceptable focus wise. I did have better weather than previous posts.

Thanks. Well, here is an image @ ISO 25,600 I posted awhile ago, shot with Extension Tubes. Uncropped. Not great, but useable in my mind.

I've ordered one of these and a 1.4x TC to use with my A7RII. Thanks to the wealth of info shared here and elsewhere. I hope I get a good copy, despite the ridiculous sums involved buying gear with the Canadian Peso, shops here are very reluctant to take returns under any circumstances.

My longest lens on Canon was the 70-300L which offered great quality in a compact design. My longest lens since switching to Sony has been my 24-240. I expect I'm in for a treat with this lens and the TC based on photos here, although there's clearly some advanced technique to some of these which I lack.

It's a lot of cash to lay out for a lens I'll probably only use seriously a couple times per year, but it will make a big difference on those couple of trips/outings.

I hope the focus performance is adequate on the A7RII to shoot some larger wildlife (BIF are not my thing)... at least until a successor high res body comes along.

I should get it mid-next week. Looking forward to sharing my results and seeing more from others.

Good luck with your purchase virtualrain. The FE 100-400 is an amazing lens, even when used with the TCs.
For BIFs I use it only on the A9 as it focuses so much faster than on the A7r.2.
For landscape and relatively slow moving wildlife shots the A7r.2 will work just fine, as does my a6300.
I need to check out more closely how the FE 100-400 handles the smaller pixel pitches though.

Is the Sony A7R II + 100-400mm + 1.4x teleconverter a usable combo for birds in flight or not really? I recently got the 100-400 and it's an amazing lens but on the fence with respect to the teleconverter.

I have had an opportunity to do a small test drive with the Sony FE 100-400mm lens with and without the 2x adaptor on a a7RII. Because there are several pictures, I have uploaded them to an online gallery and the images can be downloaded to your computer for more detailed inspection. Here is the link

http://papapictures.zenfolio.com/p746607527

On the right side, there is an info button where you can see the camera information and I indicated the use of the 2x adaptor status in the comments, below the pictures.

Please be kind to me because I am not a wildlife or sports photographer. While I looked for some nice creatures to shoot, none seemed willing to have their picture taken and the action available was not all that exciting so I had to improvise.

I would also add that I have never shot an 800mm lens before so I don't have a real basis for comparison. I have shot a 200-400mm f4 Nikon lens on safari a few years ago.

A couple of comments.

1. In all configurations, I am not sure I would consider this to be a handheld lens. It is a bit heavy for my taste, but I am nearly 70. Younger folks may feel differently. For all of the pictures, I used a red pod to stabilize the camera.

2. Focus seemed to search a bit in the in the full mode, but was quick in the infinity-3m mode.

3. When confronted with seedheads on tall grasses with the 2x adaptor on, the focus seemed to flutter for a second or so before locking on,

4. For the couple of action pictures, I used continuous focus (AF-C) and focus priority.

5. The zoom stiffness ring if set to stiff causes some motion at the camera body which can prevent the autofocus from working.

Formal lens testing I will leave that to the likes of DxO. I prefer to see how a lens performs in my typical shoot mode. In the 100-400mm use, I find the lens to be quite good and certainly as good as the 70-200 f4 Sony lens and perhaps a bit better. And to get a 400mm reach is really nice. For the 2x adaptor configuration, I am not quite sure how I feel. I have no basis of comparison, but I suppose if I really needed a long reach on bright days, the 2x is pretty inexpensive choice.

Had to sadly send mine back yesterday after testing it, it would not focus at 300-400mm no matter how I adjusted the IS or shutter speed FW 4.0 A7RII
Makes me wounder if I want a replacement

IMHO to get a really good experience with the FE 100-400 and TCs for BIFs I choose the A9.
Sure one can get an image of a BIF with the A7r2 but one will also miss a few that the A9 would capture.
So, how do you define "usable"?

Thanks for the good report. IMHO you would benefit from the A9 for your photography.
I mostly shoot this lens handheld with IBIS on.
I have the zoom stiffness ring set to stiff and have not experienced any problems, but, unless the lens is mounted on a tripod, I support it with one hand.

So after reading 23 pages I see no indication of a firmware update and it's the fault of a poor copies?

How can you have lens creep with the tension ring designed into the lens

I doubt those numbers. Sony's site for the 100-400FE alone says it is 49.3 oz without the tripod mount. That's over 3 lbs.

Apparently the amount of tension has decreased slightly with use. When new, it seemed to be just barely enough.
