This is a high risk question. How important is the 1.4 teleconverter? How often do you use it? Are there any downsides to using it? I understand you lose one stop, but thats OK.

My 1.4 x teleconvertrer is practically glued on my 100-400 GM. Especially when shooting birds and butterfly's. There is a loss of a stop but there is vertically no image quality penalty for using it.

I find the 1.4x tc valuable but I don't use it all the time. Sometimes it gets me so close that for moving subjects it's hard to remain in the frame. But I have to say, it on my A6500 most of the time.

I had a TC 1.4x but I returned it because I thought the image less sharp. When reading your comments about it, i wonders if it's because I have a imac 5k and see the resolution lost or because I had a bad TC copy.

I don't think your monitor resolution would be the reason the images looked softer with the 1.4x teleconverter. If the images looked sharp on that same monitor without the teleconverter, I would suspect the teleconverter was not a good copy, or the increased resolution and less light/reduced shutter speed of the teleconverter made it more difficult for a good sharp hand-held shot. If these shots were all taken on a tripod then I would definitely give another teleconverter a try. I know that others here on this forum with the 100-400 GM using the 1.4x teleconverter have also gotten very high quality results with this setup.
