When tight the BH-30 will hold the lens stationary. I've used a smaller Markins head with 600/4 lens and it was fine. Only issue is finding a balance point where it isn't too loose or too tight and at that point you would be holding onto it anyways especially since you are using it on monopod vs tripod.

Gotcha. I'm hoping I can manage to snap some great images either way. Appreciate the info!

Get a gimbal head. Even the cheap ones are better than what you are proposing.

It's a bit late unfortunately. I fly out tomorrow. Plus, wildlife photography is not something I do often. It's annoying, I do own a BH-55 but I don't currently have access to it.

I tried shooting with my 500mm on a ballhead and monopod/tripod, but was really nervous about it flopping. I use a gimbal and this works well, but if I didn't have a gimbal I would prefer to simply screw the lens mount directly to the monopod, assuming the vertical angle is relatively minor.

Have a great trip!!

I'm just trying to imagine how this would work... we'll be shooting from a viewing platform which I believe is slightly raised. Wouldn't that mean I would have to be tilting the lens down to shoot the bears, thus my tripod (in monopod formation) legs would be sticking out behind me and bothering everyone else on the platform?

Someone else will have to chip in on how steep the angle is, and yes, that could definitely be an issue if it was steep!

I have been using my 500 on a ball head (Kirk / markings) for 3+ years and feel confident doing this.

Not steep at all. No problem with monopod interfering with those behind you.

I know its to late but I have a monopod that I've used for several years and have liked. Its a Manfrotto 561BHDV-1. It has 3 fold up legs that helps stabilize when shooting.

brooks Falls...what a great place....your going to be pretty close...I think I used a 100-400....but 200 to 400 will be good....the walk out to the viewing area is cool....you will see Bears on the way, and hear them...just make plenty of noise walking by your self....be prepared for some other folks there on the platform....monopod might be better, as room is at the premium for a tripod...

I am going in Nov to the eagle fest in Haines...you should try that sometime

Best to you...enjoy
Les

OK I'm back. The setup worked really well.

On the flip-side, I wasn't aware of the button below the preview button on the 1DX II that I rented and accidentally pressed it at some point, switching the quality of my images from RAW to small jpeg quality (2500 pixels on the wide end) less than halfway through my trip. Of course that happened before I got all of my best images as well. Good times...

Glad you had a great trip. Sucks about the switch to jpeg. I've read about that many times even from Canon guru Artie Morris who had it happen to him on a trip (and he has used 1 series for years). There is an option in the menu to switch the function of that button so that it brings up a menu on the main LCD to change the Image quality options instead of doing it immediately if you push that button and spin the wheel. I use that option as it is safer. I realize that info is too late and useless if the camera was a rental.

Damn. This would have been great to know beforehand. It's such a stupid design to have that as the default option. I wouldn't even be too mad if it was just JPEG, but SMALL JPEG really pisses me off. I can't use half of these images for anything but Facebook.

Guess I'll have to book in that week-long trip next year.

Small JPG from 1DXII will still print really nice on many mediums. I saw some prints on Metal and I may need to do that one of these days for some of my bear shots.
In my experience, first trip is just to get you hooked, best images come the second one.

I hope you realize all the suggestions didnt come without some strings ---- time to upload and share them photos

Ouch! Sorry to hear that happened but it sounds like you had a great trip otherwise.

Man, the length at which some guys will go just to convince their wives they need to go back again.

Next year will be the winner! This was just a warmup trip for you.

Silly question but why on earth is there such a button on a top end camera like this?
