Great condition 56mm with box, caps, cheapo tiffen filter, and bonus metal hood. The pouch is MIA however. There is very minute rub on 2 or 3 of the focus barrel splines that needs to be 3" from your eyeball to see. I Bought this a few months ago from an FM user and really just can't find a good use for it... it is literally just gathering dust sitting in the closet.

So, if you're tired of not shooting at 1.2 now's your chance to remedy that!

Today I had some time to compared the new 24-105/4 G zoom with some of my lenses (mostly primes).

Here is a list of lenses compared to the FE 24-105/4 G:
  1. FE 12-24/4G @ 24mm
  2. FE 35/2.8 ZA
  3. Loxia 50/2
  4. FE 55/1.8 ZA
  5. Voigtlander 65/2 APO
  6. Batis 135/2.8 APO

I was curious to know how the new zoom compares to the FE 12-24/4 G. The only FL that overlaps is 24mm and imo, it's the weakest focal length for 12-24/4G. It's still capable of high resolution but from my previous tests, it performs better from 15-20mm.

The below 1:1 crops were manual focused towards the mid-field at infinity distance in order to neutralize field curvature. Best of three for each lens. Default settings in LR except for sharpening which was the same for both lenses.

The Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G is now in stock!

The 24-105/4 G seems to have the resolution/contrast edge throughout the entire image field wide open (f/4) compared to the 12-24 @24mm. The colors are more pleasant as well with less green bias.
The difference is not big but it's noticeable at 1:1 magnification.

Sony FE 24-105/4 G VS FE 12-24/4 G @24mm

At f/5.6, the 24-105/4 G zoom still has a small advantage, especially in the center.

Sony FE 24-105/4 G VS FE 12-24/4 G @24mm

At f/8: They get similar but something interesting happens towards the edge: The 12-24/4 G improves at f/8 and the 24-105/4 G deteriorates. So, at f/8, I see a slight higher resolution towards the edges for the 12-24/4G, which is a reversal from wider apertures. They are very similar though.

FE 24-105/4 G vs FE 35/2.8 ZA:

I consider the FE 35/2.8 ZA excellent at infinity distance. Here is how it compares to the 24-105/4G @35mm.

First off, it looks like the zoom at 35mm is more like 40mm. The 35/2.8 ZA prime has a slightly edge at center but the zoom does well across the field. I prefer the color rendering from the 35/2.8.
The corners look great for the zoom wide open.

FE 24-105/4 G vs FE 35/2.8 ZA

At f/5.6: Similar to f/4, the 35/2.8 ZA still has a slight edge in resolution and contrast at center. Towards the corners, the prime improves while the 24-105/4G remains the same. I don't see any improvement from wide open but the corners were already excellent.

FE 24-105/4 G vs FE 35/2.8 ZA
At f/8: Not much improvement from either lens. The corners look noticeably better for the prime.
It's interesting to note that at 35mm, my 24-105/4 crops look noticeably better towards the edges at f/4 than at f/8. I've tested this multiple times and always get similar results. However, if I focus on the corner at working aperture, f/4 looks identical to f/8. There seems to be focus shift combined with field curvature.

FE 24-105/4 G vs Loxia 50/2

at f/4: The zoom 'wide-open' held its own against the Loxia 50/2. The latter has noticeable superiority in micro-contrast but resolution looks similar even in the corners.

Fred, thank you very much for taking on the task of comparing those lenses. It looks like you will be posting more comparison images and your evaluation. So far though, the first two that you compared with the 24-105 make me feel good about the optical performance of the first two Sony lenses that you compared the 24-105mm and of course, about the new lens itself.

I am looking forward to more comparison images and your evaluation of the others on the list.

Thanks again,
Joshua

FE 24-105/4 G vs Loxia 50/2

At f/5.6: All I can say is that the 24-105/4G performs great at 50mm. It improves further compared to wide open and it challenges the Loxia 50 everywhere in the field. The prime still has more punch (micro-contrast) but it's a great performance for such long range zoom.

Center at f/5.6. The zoom gets closer in resolution and only loses in contrast

It's worth noting that the zoom at 50mm is more like 55mm, so focal lengths are not very precise.

At f/8: Similar performance. The Loxia has slight more contrast but the zoom performs great.

On my loaner 28 and 50 where extremely good. Not surprised how well this is comparing to the primes. Great showing from Sony. Nice work Fred

Thanks Joshua. The zoom will never win against these excellent primes but as you will see, it hold its own. I will post the remaining comparisons tomorrow.

It's tough for any prime to be compared to Loxia 50/2, CV 65/2, ZM 85/4 or Batis 135/2.8...so the zoom has a tough road ahead.

Fred how do you feel about the IQ of your zoom. Do you think you have a golden copy of it.
