I’ve never really owned a good 24-70 range zoom, i used to have a 17-35 and miss it at times.

I’ve always been the one that thought, I have the range covered with fast primes, so it’s not needed.

And usually that’s true, yesterday we went to the zoo so I brought my 70-200, 80-400 and a couple primes
28/50/85

I never once took my 80-400 out of the bag, it was getting later and 5.6 wouldn’t cut it.

I put my 1.4x on my 200 a few times but noticed i was taking it off to get the speed, or because it was too long.

Even bare it was too long a lot. I couldn’t take a animal pic, turn around and get a fam pick without needing to dig in the bag and get a prime out.

Anyway, this got me to thinking i would have been happier on this day with a 24(28 etc)-70 2.8

I have a 24-120, that’s normally decent for snap shots stopped down but I didn’t even bring it, would have been slow anyway.

Anyone ever buy a 24-70 2.8, after owning all the good prime in that range and regret getting one never using it?

I know most people say it should be your first one, but I’ve never really needed it, or thought i didn’t. Swapping primes is normally fine, but chasing a kid around i didn’t want to be jacking with swapping lenses around non stop.

I sold the 17-35 way back when to buy the 17-55vr for dx, but never did and shot ff again anyway now.

So the conundrum, get another 17-35 or 20-35, or a 24-70 and hope I use them.

Anyway sorry for the rant, just thinking out loud. I fear if i get one it won’t get much use. But maybe it would and I wouldn’t use my primes as much anymore for that range??

To me swapping primes is what you do after you have the basic focal ranges (14/16mm - 200mm) covered with some kind of zooms. I don't use my 24-70mm that much anymore, at one time it was a staple in my bag. But now I'm shooting different stuff and primarily use either the Sigma 150-600mm Sport or the 24/45/85mm tilt-shifts. But if I were on a casual outing, you can bet I'd take the 24-70mm Different lenses for different purposes.

That’s pretty much how I’ve always been, depending on the outing depends on what lenses i bring.

It’s normally my 70-200 and 300 f/4 and or 80-400 for outdoor stuff and some primes in the bag, or a small kit of primes for casual and my 24-120, which it seems like i almost never use so I just left it at home

The 28 2.8 and 50 1.4 in a pocket is much less conspicuous than a big zoom even on my d3 so normally when we are kicking around doing stuff that’s what I do.

I might find for normally stuff the 24-70 is too big and cumbersome and wish i just had my 28 mounted.

Maybe I’ll rent one next time we have something planned like going to a festival etc and see if I think it’s a pain compared to my primes.

I offend left the 17-35 home for this reason too.

I used to use my 17-35mm a lot, but I tend to use my 24-70mm more these days

It's not often I need f2.8, so my Siggy 24-105 gets the nod. When I need 2.8 I use the Tamron, because it has VR. My Nikon 24-70 non vr was a bit sharper, but the Nikon VR was priced out of my reach. Shaky hands have made VR a requirement.

Bought two wide angle lenses (Canon 24-70 L II and Sigma Art 35 mm with Canon
mount) for 32-day cruise from Los Angeles around Cape Horn to Buenos
Aires. Used the 24-70 far more than I imagined. useful for interior
ship shots and animal shots on river excursions. definitely a keeper.

I have several primes (20, 28, 58, 105, 300 and 500mm), but also got 70-200 and 24-70 (both E versions). My reason was both convenience of the zooms as well as fast AF for covering my daughters school functions etc. Dont use the 24-70mm as much as I should though.

That’s kinda my worry, I’ll get one and not end up using it much.

I have 7 prime lenses

Yes, it’s a lot of money stuck in something I don’t use regularly. The lens itself is very good, but after you’ve been spoilt by f1.4 primes, you want more of them. I went to Detroit last week for the Auto Show, and ended up taking my 20mm, 28mm and 105mm primes and not the 24-70mm, although the zoom would have been most logical to take for that event. Used the 20mm once and 28mm rest of the time. That said, these zooms hold their value, and are invaluable when you get one shot at a shot, as is the case at school functions.

If you are an event/wedding photographer the 24-70/2.8 is a great choice. I have had 4 copies both Canon/Nikon and usage was about 5% at best. I prefer primes in this range. Very much a personal choice

Not at all, for fun I shoot wildlife and take some shots at boat races(but not enough since I’m a racer and I’m spending the majority of the time concentrating on prepping boat for my class and running it etc)

And family type shooting of the kids and dog playing etc.

Most of my shooting is 200+mm

Or a prime on going places with the fam. I don’t have anywhere near the time I used to for fun shooting.

I have a 20, 35, 85 (all 1.8), 2/135 and the 24-70 (non-VR). The zoom is great, but like you, I almost always reach for the primes first (it helps that they balance better on the D810 IMO). I've gone back and forth deciding on whether to sell. It's listed for sale locally now to free up funds for a new prime or maybe telezoom, but I'm still ambivalent and know that as soon as I do sell it some event will come up and will be kicking myself (I'm a hobbyist though, so it wouldn't really matter).

Question: if I do end up selling the zoom, does it make sense to pick up a nifty fifty or the 50 Art to fill the gap between 35 and 85 (with the normal fl, I basically shoot my kids and not much else)?

Personal preference on that really. I'm a big fan of 35 or 50 for a carry-along prime with the family or just around the house. If I'm wanting a setup that isn't bulky then the 35mm f/2d is usually my go-to lens. It doesn't get much smaller and it performs well. I like shooting the 50 Art (neither light nor compact), but none of the Nikon 50s do it for me.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I figured personal preference was the response I was going to receive (I hesitated posting but thought what the hell). I find I always have my 35 mounted for the reasons you stated. I guess 50 is just too close to 35 and I have room to crop on the D810, so I guess I'll stick with that spread and either upgrade one of them to a 1.4 or go with a telezoom or the new sigma 14 for astro.

Thanks, again.

I tend to use the 24-70 more so when I can't take a lot of gear with me - because it covers a good range that I will need, and 14-24 for wider stuff. But my favourite combo for street photography is my FX bodies with primes.

I have 24, 35, 50 and 58mm primes within the 24-70 range, and prefer them over the 24-70. However, there’s times when the 24-70 is mandatory because changing lenses slowes things down and breaks the rhythm. It’s also a nice backup, and therefore always in my bag on paid work (Think Tank Airport, so being on wheels helps). I rarely take it for personal stuff, as I don’t tend to use it nor do I want to lug it around.

If I were doing paid work, there is no way I would part with it. When I'm doing favors for family/friends or shooting holiday photos of my kids, for example, I always have it with me - but those are few and far between and no reason they can't be done with my primes.
