sBIF (s=small) are not my cup of tea, but I use the 1Dx/2 & 5DsR without hesitation for this type of photos.
Many BIF fans complain and wait for a camera which will make pictures for them, but all current Canon offerings are excellent, except the noise performance.

This static bird is for those who cannot see beyond sharpness:

and here is something this for those who can:

Nice images, but judging from my experience with DIF (dragonfly-in-flight) having a relatively light camera and lens (faster to point and track the subject) and good MF might be more important for getting the shot than the best body. Many of these subjects can move faster than AF can keep up with, and it doesn't help if the photographer cannot keep them in the viewfinder for sufficiently long time (let alone keep the AF point in the right place ...).

You can get good shots from most subjects in the right conditions (like when they hover, slow down to land, follow a predictable track etc.) but in general it is hard work and the 'best' camera might even work against you ;-)

Thanks. Equipment choice is a personal matter. I like to photograph dragonflies & other bugs, being flown :-)

Nice work on these Lan. Some of the tougher BIF one can do. When I owned the 5DSR I found it to be very good with AF. I still prefer 1DX or 1DX2 for the faster frame rate and IMO a bit better AF response vs the 5 series BUT both cameras as well as 5D3 and 5D4 (and dare I say 7D2 on occasion) gave me good results for BIF and sBIF (although I don't get too many opportunities for sBIF).

Mostly what I'm trying to shoot right now(sBIF) with my 1DMKIV and 100-400v2, and I might have to shoot 200-400 shots just to get a few. The AF has a very hard time keeping up. I'm hoping maybe a 5D3 might be a better choice for AF speed.
The 1DMKIV works great with larger birds. What makes the more current cameras better at small Birds in Flight ?

Thanks again everyone.
The 5DsR requires learning its vagaries. Currently, in a second season, I enjoy it a lot.
Opportunities for sBIF abound. House Sparrows, other small birds are ubiquitous, fun to watch and to photograph. Since sBIF will tests the limits of the current AF technology, this makes it an interesting experiment and great fun.
Current BIF popularity is puzzling. Static bird photos are very interesting and rewarding.

Experimenting with the 3D effect can also be intriguing.

Why BIF so popular? Pretty simple answer to this one I think, its a natural theater for them, and it really shows off what they were meant to do. Plus its a challenge. For a perched shot sometimes you acn even move around to get the light where you want it on the bird. Most of the time for a BIF, you don't always have that option, sometimes but not always.
These are great shots, really show off the birds detail very well.

Likely a "watermark" of sorts.

(1) What's with all those Purple martin shots ? Don't you have any Barn swallows on Vancouver island (Parksville) ?

(2) Have you tried using any Rebels, or a camera like 80D, for BIF photography recently ?
If "all current Canon offerings are excellent", why do you use 1DXII for the shots which Rebel T7 could also make for 10x lower price ?

Are you implying that Lan is actually a doppelgänger of a certain other forum member??😳😳

I've heard that Canon gears aren't sufficient for barn swallows. One requires Nikon D5 or Sony A9 for such small fast flyers.

Lan11 could be "anyone's" nom de plume for when they post sBIF photographs on this board. For all we know, that shooter could be the member we know as EB-1, or Jefferson, or SurfingRon, or Arthur Morris.....etc.

I've never been on Vancouver, so it is not me.

Very Nice shoots your keeper rate on the 1DxII must be much higher than on the 5DsR.

My virtual friend PetKal asked:

(1) What's with all those Purple martin shots ? Don't you have any Barn swallows on Vancouver island (Parksville) ?

Not sure what birds are there, but there is one strange bird for sure .
Here, in Afghanistan, we don’t have barns, thus no Barn Swallows. But, we have military forces in profusion busily guarding poppy crops. This bring us to your strange find of the “white stuff” on the 800 mm pipe. I’d say, dandruff.
I tested the 1Dx2 using PM as targets and I continue during my current gear streamlining experiments. More about it next week, when time allows.

(2) Have you tried using any Rebels, or a camera like 80D, for BIF photography recently ?
If "all current Canon offerings are excellent", why do you use 1DXII for the shots which Rebel T7 could also make for 10x lower price ?

I stand corrected. It should be: "all my current Canon offerings are excellent”. Despite deep curiosity I cannot afford time to “fiddle on the roof” with these “marvels”. Past experience with the “baby 1Dx” was enough of hair rising experience even on a bold head.

“Lan11 could be "anyone's" nom de plume for when they post sBIF photographs on this board. For all we know, that shooter could be the member we know as EB-1, or Jefferson, or SurfingRon, or Arthur Morris.....etc. ”

I noticed a convenient omission of PetKal on the list of “nom de plumage”.

qc_mountain asked: “Very Nice shoots your keeper rate on the 1DxII must be much higher than on the 5DsR.”

Thanks. The “keeper rate” is a different thing to different people. If you mean sharpness that’s correct, but quite low by my “keeper” requirements.

Bsmooth asked: “The 1DMKIV works great with larger birds. What makes the more current cameras better at small Birds in Flight ?”

Sorry, I missed your question. The 1D4 served me well, but I prefer bigger sensors. Try it with a prime lens.
Despite progress, the current AF technology struggles with sBIF. Success with dark sBIF against dark, busy background is marginal.
