There's been a lot of buzz lately about the M-mount 7artisans 50/1.1 "Sonnar"-esque for $379 on Amazon.

Where else can you get a (potentially crappy) f1.1 full-frame short-flange lens for under $400? Wowsers.

Mine came in today and I thought I'd share some preliminary shots.

Yes, yes, it's about as bad as a brick wall but I think it's a fairly good approximation. Used a mirror and bubble level to establish collinearity with wall. Sony a7, exported from ARWs without any editing, to JPGs.

Just don't look at the right side of the image. After shooting these and examining in Lightroom I realized the box was about 1/4" (6.5mm) dented compared to the middle and left edges.

And at the expense of you having to be exposed to my mug .... selfies at minimum focussing distance. Used the live view magnifier plus focus bracketing and picking the sharpest one. I kind of missed focus on the iris and kept hitting the eyebrow (yeah, lame, I know) but it'll have to do for now.

Based on the images of the text, it doesn’t seem usable at anywhere near wide open, for flat-field subjects.

Portrait images are soft, and pleasant looking, as is the bokeh.

Nice test shots.

Surprisingly the bokeh isn't squared off like in the sample images from previously release before.
And also the bokeh makes it seems like I am traveling through space time warp. Quite dizzy...

It is a little too soft wide open but for $369 USD it is not that bad. Corners are not great by any means. Focus throw has some play.

The 7artisan images look like someone was traveling at warp speeds in a future spacecraft and shot those images. The bokeh isn't pleasant. In fact, it's quite distracting- not in a "busy" way, but in the way it smears and streaks out anything not in focus.

To anyone in the market..
It's a neat lens
Keep in mind it does not focus to infinity on the SL via M-SL adapter
Rear baffle hits some internal baffling (excuse the terminology, i dunno wtf to call it.. but its metal touching metal, no glass/sensor)

Also I've read of mounting issues on M4
And of course its not usable on M5 or its going to knock out the metering arm

Where did u get that info from? I've had great results with this lens on my M7 and M240, but have not yet tried it on my M5.

M5 is not listed as a supported camera in the list
Further the M5 of all the film cameras is the most dangerous for use with rear protruding/collapsible lenses because of the old school moving meter arm it use (CL or CLE has similiar issue as I recall).

So personally I’m not chancing it.

Interesting.

In one ebay ad it mentions this:

5. Compatibility: Leica M-M, Leica M240, Leica M6, Leica M7, Leica M8, Leica M9, Leica M9p, Leica M10, Leica M4p, Leica M240P, Leica ME,
Leica M262; it can be auto-focus when used with Sony A7II/ A7RII by your adapter.

On Amazon:

Compability: Leica M2 M3 M4-2 M5 M6 M7 M8 M9 M10 M4P M9p M240 M240P ME M262 M-M CL

I compared my 7artisans to my Nokton 1.1, and the former does have the back of the lens block stick out way further when focused at infinity. Thanks for the heads up!

On a positive note
On the metal cowling/baffle surrounding rear element, I shaved off some metal/sanded down with a dremel.
Just a millimeter or so was all I needed.
I now have infinity focus on the SL.

Still not going anywhere near my M5 with this.
