p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · What Lens for Budapest

I am headed to Eastern Europe for business and have a couple of day layover in Budapest. I am particularly interested is what lens to take for the buda castle and shooting the parliament building from across the river at night. I am hoping to get away with just taking my Leica Q (28 mm) but wondering if this is too wide for the Parliment building shot. Any advice is welcome. Thanks

On a full frame body the 28mm should be fine. I would recommend you take a walk up to the Buda castle area if you have time, particularly the area around the cathedral. There are some nice spots up there and you have a nice perspective of the entire Pest side of the city from up there. You might struggle to take in the entire cathedral on a 28mm lens unless you plan on stitching images, but aside from that you should be fine.

I visited Budapest in May. I shot a Matthias Church tower at 24mm from across the street during the day, then in the evening from a cruise boat I shot the Parliament building at 31mm, the castle at 67mm. All those were taken using a full frame body with a 24-70 f2.8 zoom. From the boat I also shot night closeups of the Liberty Bridge at 124mm. Your 28mm will work well for a lot of what you'll shoot, and won't be overly wide for the Parliament building shot.

I second ironmarshal's recommendation that you try to visit the castle area.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up taking just the q and it worked out great.
