Hi. Wide open @ 200mm the IS II is sharp and contrasty, isn't it? What are you seeing in your 'real world' pics?

Because I owned a 70-200mm f2.8L and it was only 'sharp' at f4 upwards. At f2.8 it was definitely flawed.

So now I am saving for a 70-200mm f2.8L IS II - I want that to know sharpness is there wide open.

Thanks for any input.

Paul, I will comment on my experience with both lenses and I traded up for the II. See feedback to confirm. But I found the I version was sharp wide open BUT...when doing a macro adjustment test to the 1..I found that by manually focusing just a very small amount made my lens perfect. Knowing that I kept the 1. I really could not tell the oof unless I enlarged more that 66% So when the 2 came out, on B&S a member wanted to trade the 2 for the 1! The 2 is tack sharp w.o in my experience over what... 5 years or more! It is my most used lens w.o. in all situations.
I can only offer my experience with the 1&2 versions. Hope this helps somewhat.
Dan

Paul, I just checked my feedback for the Trade..It is not there. Why I have no idea. I know many of my B&S's were not migrated when Fred went to the new "feedback" template. Both of us did post feedback, He was in California and we crossed shipped....I wanted to confirm age...Sorry....but my statement remains.
Dan

IT IS THERE Paul....

70-200 L IS II is visibly sharper and more contrasty at every setting compared to 70-200 2,8 L. At 200mm f2,8 - f2,3 it *can* be stunningly sharp. My camera doesn't seem to be playing 100% correctly with my 1DIV, so I'm using it mainly at f3.5 for moving subjects, just to be safe. The older workhorse, at least my copy, was good from f3,2 and while that could be sharp too, it's simply not as good compared to the 70-200 L IS II.

I'm a photojournalist and use my 70-200 f/2.8L IS II wide open all the time--portraits, news events, sports, etc. It is blazing sharp wide open, period.

That said, I'm a little surprised your old 70-200 f/2.8 was only sharp at f/4. I've owned and heavily used ALL the 70-200 f/2.8 lenses and they performed flawlessly wide open. I think something is wrong with your old lens--maybe a lens element has been knocked out of alignment. It happens.

The IS makes a big difference on the new one.
Wide open at 200mm is sharper than the I and non-IS.
at 100mm, it's sharper than my 100mm f2
Last, the color and contrast is nicer. I don't like to muck with contrast and saturation if I don't need to.

Thanks for the replies.

My 70-200mm f2.8L was acceptable wide open at 200, but when viewing at 1:1 for critical sharpness you could see its faults - and improved MFD and IS aside, I believe a crisper image with fewer aberrations is what you get when you pay the big bucks for the IS II.

The IS II is the best 70-200mm I ever tested which are the Tamron A009, Sony FE 70-200mm F4, EF 70-200mm F4 and even the rental copy I got of the Sony 70-200mm 2.8 GM.
Only reason I sold it is because I am a primes lover and do not do too many events.

July 19th update. I found what seems to be a solid f2.8L IS II. Minor external wear, clean optics, much better than my 70-200mm f2.8L at f2.8 @ 200mm.

Lens, Canon filter, original hood and tripod ring - $1200.00.

Can't wait to get it in front of some action.

Ok my experience owning both and based on my very good copy of the v1 is at 200 f/2.8 the v1 was reasonably sharp, certainly not soft and very usable, quite sharp at f/3.2. On the v2 at 200 f/2.8 images are tack sharp and similarly when using a 1.4 TC, 280 f/4 is sharp. Contrast is better on the v2 wide open, but v1 could be corrected to cover that for the most part.

V2 is much better with TC's, IS is much better, mfd and max mag. are much better, just a brilliant zoom and worth the upgrade, especially if you haven't got a great v1 copy. From what I'm seeing the new Tamron G2 70-200 is also optically superb, only nit with me is it has massive focus breathing, so while mfd is great, max mag is quite poor compared to others.
