p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikkor AF-S 200-400mm E FL ED Rumored for the Year's End

Nikon is rumored to announce a new Nikkor AF-S 200-400mm f/4E FL ED lens towards the end of 2017. The lens will be equipped with a built-in 1.4x extender just like the latest Canon version. Optical quality is expected to be extremely high and so will be the price (the current models is priced at $6,996.95). The new lens will mainly be targeted at sports photographers. Shipping should start before the 2018 FIFA World Cup that will take place in Russia from June 14th to July 15th, 2018.

The 200-400mm has been on the list of lenses that will get updated with a fluorite element (FL). I will have more information on this in the coming months.

I recently bought an as new 4 year old 200-400VRII, owned by a gentleman in his 70s who found it too heavy, with the Nikon drop in polarizer assembly, for about $3700.00 Canadian or $2700.00 US. Based on the Canon's 200-400 price, and assuming Nikon will be about the same, the new one will be about $16000.00 Canadian + 13% tax or $18000.00 And I have the 1.4II ans 1.4III

It would have to be a hell of an upgrade to even consider it. Which I won't be. I'd pick up a 600 FL if I were spending that kind of money.

Yeah, I'm expecting the prices you mentioned. If they pull a rabbit out of the hat and make it $9000 USD or less though, I think it'd sell like hotcakes (provided it was solid optically). Not like that'd hurt sales of other lenses - a semi-compromised 560mm f5.6 won't tempt too many 600mm f4 users, and pricing it at $9000 or less will only encourage people to buy it instead of a 200-500.

This update is expected along with the 300/2.8 and 200/2. The more the better. The built in 1.4TC is a nice surprise if true, though it does ensure that I will never be able to afford one Good thing the 200-500 is as good as it is!

Not sure why it would sell like hotcakes, when the Canon version didn't. Too big, heavy and expensive for most photographers, so market will be similar as for Canon - mostly pro sports shooters. IMO

If it was cheaper - if it's priced at or above the Canon, it definitely wouldn't sell as much, the hotcakes comment is contingent on the sub-$9k price tag which I think is unlikely. But if it did hit that price point, I know a lot of people using 200-400, 80-400, and 200-500 lenses that want something that's better for longer distances and/or has faster AF and better IQ, but still want the versatility of a zoom.

I cant be the only one of us who wishes for 100 400vr with good close up performance ( like the canon 100-400l is ii )? A nice tool for butterflys/dragonflys and close quarter birding too.

Um, not by a longshot.

The 200-500 is a nice, mid-level lens ... but not in the same league.

You're likely to see an 80-400 E upgrade that will do just that

Nice, mid-level lens?

All things considered to me, the lens is outstanding.

The inarguable proof is demonstrated in the images throughout the 200-500 thread.

Yes, one often has to work to get the really high quality out of it. But you have to do that with any lens. And it is there. Ok, so the highest quality is at the closer distances. Isn't that the case with all the superzooms?

Images taken at closer distances with the 200-500 are often thought to have been taken with one of the two Nikon 500 primes. People have said this.

I am one who can afford a 500 or 600 Fl, but so far, the 200-500 has taken away that desire. Increased weight and lack of versatility are factors for me. I am a nature photojournalist who has had several 300 2.8's. I feel the 200-500 got me through that 500mm threshold and into high quality images.

This is all subjective. This lens is better than mid-level.....by a long shot.

Robert

I certainly love the lens, but mid-level is accurate. Compared to a high level lens like a telephoto prime, focus is much slower and hunts more, image quality is ever so slightly softer, and build quality isn't quite the same. The 200-400 should be closer to the telephoto primes in all those categories than it is to the 200-500 - assuming they match or best the Canon.

With that said, I'd be unlikely to upgrade - I adore the 200-500, and adore even more the fact that I can afford it. If I had the means though, and shot sports or wildlife professionally, the new 200-400 would get a very close look.

The 100-400 II is the benchmark of superzooms out to 400. I would be excited to see Nikon's answer and will be surprised if that happens.

Okay, upper-mid-level, but it is no super-telephoto lens.

You're opinion is what's subjective. The 200-500 achieves only average, to upper-average, marks in any category you want to measure lens performance.

Nikon knows this ... hence the price ... when compared to what Nikon itself prices its *truly* outstanding lenses ... hence their price.

Denial isn't rebuttal.

Not all. The 200-400s (both Canon and Nikon) surpass it handily.

Canon's 100-400 II only surpasses the 100-400 original dinosaur ... and Nikon's 80-400 dinosaur.

It's a good lens, though, don't get me wrong.

Ditto

Nikon's 70-200 E FL ED surpassed Canon's 100-400 II ... and I am sure the 80-400 E FL ED will do likewise

As Nikon phases in their restructuring, expect to see a move to higher end products. Look at the latest FL versions of their lenses on Lenscore.org. The 70-200 FL, 400 FL and 600 FL are all #1 on there. These aren't meant to be enthusiast class lenses, and certainly the 200-400 or any other FL tele would be in line with those as far as target market. If that's what it costs to put out a class leading lens, then that's what it is.

In a similar vein, the 70-200 FL is about 33% more than the Canon version (probably the direct competition). The Canon 200-400 w/1.4x is $11,000. "8 grand" would would be a comparative deal. I decided to hold off on the previous versions because of mixed reviews. If they release this, I'm on it. I primarily shoot sports and this fills a unique usage.
