p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Prariie dog

These little guys had a village near my camp site so I ventured out with the long lens to see if I could get one. They stand motionless for a while then in a flash they are gone. I took several and had some with interaction between a pair but the grass always intruded. This is the cleanest one.

Comments welcome

Cute! Nice pose too. Grass is very low-level distraction, barely on the radar.

Nice catchlight in the eye and solid detail all-around.

I'd crop this guy vertically to go hand-in-hand with the pose.

Nice capture.

Might shift Jeff's crop so more negative space is being looked into ... less behind.

Yep, your last edit looks very nice and was just what it needed.

Nice shot!

One nice thing about AF at F8 and lots of pixels, This crop is huge in that I have given away most of my frame.. .

+1 @ crop shift. Might consider just a kiss of selective sharpening to the eye / catchlight, as it seems to be a touch more distant (profile) than the plane of focus @ nearer leg / grass (revealed a smidge by heavy crop).

Yep, I will look into it, but it is already past my visual acuity at that area.
You notice I cheated and stopped down to f11 for more DOF.

Cheatin', Schmeatin'.

I've long advocated getting off WO when using a TC.

WO tends to be a touch soft, and a TC softens things up more by diverging the light ... i.e. playing with potential double soft. Not so much of an issue in high contrast light, but something to be aware of just the same.

Nice work Ben. Your second crop is the winner. I seem to remember that prairie dogs live in large colonies. Not sure why they call them "dogs." Probably this subject matter is food for future challenges.

Yep, more room is the clear winner.
