Some not that promising flare tests on a German forum.

Bummer about the flare in those examples. The Tamron is clearly superior in that respect.

Would be great to see a comparison with the cv 12.

I am planning on comparing it to the CV 12/5.6 today. I will test it against the 16-35/4 ZA, Loxia 21/2.8 and CV 15/4.5 III at infinity distance. I'm very curious to find out the results regarding resolution, contrast, aberration and flare performance.
I'm expecting flare performance and sunstar rendering to be similar to the 16-35/4 ZA. We'll find out.

In hand looks to be a good copy too. Manual focus has nice feel to it. Really like that.

Look forward to your tests bud. It's really nice on camera

Take your time checking your copy while you are at B&H!

The CV 10/5.6 seems to do better with flare.

That flare looks like 14-24 Nikkor style. But I expected such to happen considering the bulbous element. Tamron 15-30 is exceptional in that regard.

When testing sunstar rendering at several apertures, I was surprised by the flare performance. Here is a sample at 12mm.

Here is the CV 12/5.6 III in comparison (Same aperture f/16)

Sharper more defined sunstar edges (10-point vs 14-point). Pretty much no flare in comparison but higher vignetting.

I guess we have a winner when it comes to sunstars. Are there other conditions under which you could shoot the 12-24 and not get those flaring results?

With my copy, straight to the sun there will be flare. If the sun is right above the frame, it's great but if it's located towards the top sides, there will be very noticeable flare on the opposite bottom direction.
I will test more later on when the sun gets lower.

Here is a sample with the sun right above the frame. (best case so far)

Fred,
The flares are definitely there but they don't look bad, IMHO and as matter of fact, they can be used artistically. If the background is somewhat busier like in a real-life image, they will be even less noticeable. In that image, if push comes to shove, we can clone them out easily .

Sure, flare and aberration can be used artistically. I'm just being objective and reporting what I see.
I will wait a couple more hours for better lighting to test resolution and contrast at infinity compared to other lenses on the zoom range.

My preliminary test (with sub-optimum lighting) shows the 12-24/4 ahead of the CV 12/5.6 in regards to resolution and contrast.
At center, the CV 12/5.6 III is very competent (if not better) but getting out of the center area, there is a much bigger resolution drop in comparison. With the 12-24/4 G zoom there's a more gradual fall off.
At mid zone, the zoom is noticeably better with higher contrast and resolution and this trend continues all the way towards the edges. The difference is very apparent at f/5.6 (where the prime is wide-open) but it's still very noticeable even at f/8 and f/9.

The zoom has a neutral cast (similar to 16-35/4). The CV 12/5.6 III's images have a warmer cast in comparison.

I will test this again and post some crops but there you have it. From this initial test, it looks like the new Sony ultra-wide zoom overtakes the prime very easily.

that's to be expected IMO. While the CV 10/12's are nice, they could definitely use some edge performance.

Interesting results against the CV 12. Any chance you could compare it to the Loxia 21? that one should be very interesting.

Yes, I will compare against the CV 12, Loxia 21 and FE 16-35/4 in about an hour. Next week I will compare it against the CV 15/4.5III. (All good copies)
I'm just too curious.

I got the hunch that my CV 12mm will go on the chopping block but my Loxia 21mm stays .

Likely right, in my case I don't have the Loxia yet so Im eager to see how it does againts the Sony. My decision will be do I replace the CV 12 with the Sony.
