p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Wide Angle Lens Advice

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at the 16-35 f4 IS vs the Sigma 24-35 f2 and struggling to decide between the two. Background: I am a wedding photographer by trade and love to travel whenever I can for landscapes. On one hand the 16-35 is sharp from corner to corner, an additional 8mm on the wide end while offering weathersealing, while the Sigma gives me 2 stops of light for my wedding as well as for nightscapes. The 16-35 also provides IS which may help if I do end up vlogging in the future

Those who have shot with both, what are your opinions? Thanks in advance

I was talking to a wedding photographer about the 24-35 can didn't care for the FL much. The FL didn't have much flexible. He preferred 24-70 f2.8 v2 and carrying 35 or a 24 prime for the times he need extra stops of light.

I don't have both but I do have the 16-35 IS. I think they are quite distinctly different lenses and realistically you need both

The 16-35 IS is an excellent, versatile superwide zoom and the Sigma would make a terrific weddings lens as it's faster.

Of the two I'd have the Canon every time as I don't need f2, the Canon IS is excellent and the range is bigger (I use it for social stuff often with no issues) but you have to decide which feature is more important

I tend to shoot a bit more on the wider side. I had the 24-70 for a while but ended up selling up and going with primes. I primarily shoot with a 35/85 combo and was wondering if the 24-35 could replace the 35 instead of switching in between for a wider shot. Much to consider!

The EF 16-35/4L IS is an excellent landscape lens. At the wide end, it's slightly sharper at the edges and corners than the TS-E 17/4L (unshifted) and Zeiss 18/3.5 ZE. At 24mm, it's slightly behind the Zeiss 25/2 ZE, but very much on-par with the TS-E 24/3.5L II (unshifted), and EF 24-70/2.8L II. It's noticeably better at edges and corners than the EF 24-105/4L IS, which is not a bad lens, at all. At 35mm, it's slightly behind the Zeiss 35/2 ZE, virtually the same as the Contax 35-70/3.4 CY (a legend), and better than the EF 24-70/2.8 L II.

I don't know the Sigma Art 24-35/2 DG HSM.

Dang, I figured both would be needed, thought I (my wallet) could get away with just one.

I use full frame for pro work but when I travel I take a crop kit including the wonderful cheap 10-18mm lens, if you can live with crop that might be an idea, works very well on the 80D

P.S. Are you a Monkey Junk fan? Don't know why I'm asking, but it seems right.

Very, very different lenses IMO. The 16-35 doubles as a perfectly good wedding lens (wide angle dance floor, venue shots, dramatic church shots, outdoor ceremonies) as well. It's surprisingly compact and this makes it an easy one to throw in the bag. But it's slow and I think you need another lens at the wide end which is f/2.8 or faster.

The 24-35 is really meant to replace your 35 prime or your 24-70. But it's a brick and only 24 on the wide end.

I think there isn't a single lens solution to your needs other than perhaps the new 16-35L.

In my case, 16-35 f4 IS and 35L II are the perfect combo but this depends on your shooting style of course.

Have you seen Dustin Abbott review on it?

https://dustinabbott.net/2015/08/sigma-24-35mm-f2-dg-art-review/

So reading the views I think it could do that for you. The problem comes which do you want more. The sigma is probably the smarter by for weddings. Where the 16-35 will be better for travel and lighter. Also the 16-35 gives for flexible for wide group shots.

Haven't used them, but for landscapes 16-35.

24 isn't wide enough, if I can get 16. 24mm isn't uwa.

This assumes ff. 16mm isn't wide enough on crop.
