I happen to love the Otus focus feeling. Quite peerless IMHO. Sorry for disagreeing, nothing personal.

No worry, Philip. I know this thing is very personal. I think Wayne also expressed that he is fine with OTUS focusing. I never tried 28 but 55 and 85 both too smooth for my taste.

My 50mm Summilux was purchased brand new which is very smooth out of box. I have it CLA by DAG and adjust it to have more damp. my other lens 21 SEM, 28cron or 90APO as well as R lenses are all well damped that I am surprised Leica is so inconsistent with the focus feeling.

DAG actually also think it is too smooth and agree with me that I should have relubed. Now the lens is perfect to my use.

That is what matters, and tastes vary. I am debating whether to buy a Milvus 35, and one of the things that may keep me back is that it doesn't have Otus focusing feel and long throw...:-)

Yes, I too love the smooth focusing feel of my Otus 28 and 55.
Agree, that is a personal thing.
At 35mm focal length, the strong contenders are the 35 ART, 35L2, and now Milvus 35. I have heard that Canon and Milvus have excellent (near Otus level) 2ndary color correction(loCA) and the Sigma is very good too. Nikon has not added enough low dispersion glass elements to keep up. Sometime I would like to rent both 35L2 and Milvus 35 and do some comparison shots.
But I am pretty happy with my Otus28, RX1, and zf35/2 at the 35 focal length range.

So this lens is available now. Will be interested in seeing what kind of images it produces. This in F-mount and the D850 will be interesting.

I likewise love the feel of my 55 and 85 Oti. No 28 yet, although that may change if Philippe's persuasion succeeds

But I also like the feel of all of my ZE lenses. And the Loxiae. All good!

Well, it looks like this thread kinda died, so bringing it back. I picked up the Milvus 35 a while ago and had a chance to take it on a trip to the Oregon coast a couple of weeks ago.

Impressions:

This thing is a beast! It's as big as the Milvus 135 f/2.8.
It's heavy too. Hand holding might be difficult for some.
    Of course it's manual focus.
It's the sharpest lens I have, and I have many Milvus lenses.
    Bokeh is fantastic.

Now for a few pictures with the 5DsR and processed in Capture One to show what it's capable of...no editorials on the pics please.

Lloyd also just posted the MTF aperture series from this lens as measured by Zeiss:

I'm glad I don't have a Nikon or Canon, I'd have to have one at that money. It's essentially the 35mm equivalent of the 50/2 APO by Leica, and it's a 35/1.4, a much tougher challenge. The best lens released in quite some time, and important in design terms - a breakthrough lens at 35mm. Its f8 MTF would put most 100mm lenses to shame = top level, curvature free landscapes in an f1.4 lens. Now make the Loxia version pls, same price. [thanks Andre]

I rented one for use with film on an F2AS. People scoff at Nikon for maintaining the F-mount, but having lenses like the ZF and Milvus available for use with film is fantastic. It is said that the Milvus series sacrifices some 3D pop for detail rendering. I guess I agree, and I like the way the Milvus 35/1.4 arranges those grains of film, and, then renders them. The 3D pop may have been reduced, but not by a lot. It is very natural looking. I'll be getting one, but I have to save my lunch money.

Looks like a great update to the Z*35/1.4 classic. Now if they could just shrink it down to the size of the M-mount glass....

In this day and age, a prime landscape lens should deliver corner to corner sharpness at f/5.6, and better than f/8. This lens seems to do that, and that is most remarkable. I feel this Milvus delivers what the ZE/ZF Distagon tried to but never did IMO. All the bokeh goodness in the world could not save the deal for me with low micro contrast wide open, lots of bokeh color fringing and not even top level MTF stopped down. I suspect the Milvus will be even a notch better for landscape than the Canon L II.

I have to keep stopping myself from getting the Milvus 35/1.4. It looks like the best 35mm ever designed.

Same here. I love my 35/1.4 ZE, but the Milvus version does look like a solid improvement.

'deliver corner to corner sharpness at f/5.6, and better than f/8.'
You lose maybe 6-7% in the Milv 35 from f5.6 > f8 off a very high overall base, in other words both are great. In fact, you could do even better at f4, overall, corners are already very good. So many of the new breed peak too early in the centers, and worse still, outer frames may not continue to improve, moving from f5.6 to f8 (where we like to be able to shoot landscapes). I even read, but don't know enough even to begin to have an opinion, that asph elements may contribute to diffraction. From BH article on Bokeh by Todd Vorenkamp:

"Aspherical elements can also influence the rendering of out-of-focus regions by introducing what is known as “onion-ring” bokeh...Adding to this, *these imperfections can cause diffraction* and result in different textures on the discs."

Big if true. Asphericals can appear to be a technology still on the steep part of the developmental curve, after all these years. Looks like they are needed for modern wide angles. Handle with care, maybe?

I'd have to see a full-sized sample @ infinity on a high MP body to believe the claims of edge-to-edge sharpness. That's pretty difficult to achieve on a 35mm lens, esp one with a max aperture of f/1.4. Here's what it looks like on the 50mm Makro-Planar (D850). The left edge is a little softer due to atmospheric distortion (longer distance over water).

The difference in 40 lp/mm MTF at that level is not that important per se. What is happening at 80 lp/mm and 160 lp/mm is for use with high resolution sensors (50 MP and above), and the 40 lp/mm curves are at least the best indication we have.

That image illustrates perfectly the strength and weakness of the MP 50. Edge to edge sharpness is excellent, but the extreme corners are blurred even at f/8. The tree in the lower right is blurred towards the extreme corner, but not the left side branches of the same tree, so it is not a DOF issue either. This has also been discussed before. The Milvus 35 1.4 however should not have this weakness according to the MTF.
