That design is around 40 years old, and while it was (or better: would have been, had it come to serial production) an extraordinary lens for that time, I'm sure that Zeiss nowadays can and will make a much superiror 1,4/25mm.

Woah! I've never run across that. Wish there were some images out there from these lenses, especially the 25/1.4. I wonder if anyone could coax him into meeting up and doing an escorted shoot with them?

Dustin Abbott has done a lengthy video review of the Milvus 35/1.4 in a straight comparison with the acclaimed new Canon 35/1.4 II. To an experienced and careful long term Canon shooter, the Milvus was not a great deal better overall; but to Zeiss aficionados the picture quality is a small but significant step up. The sure color handling and tonal gradation make it a better landscape lens, and its near-medium bokeh at wider apertures is more assured. The Canon has a stronger center at wider apertures but odd color. The Milvus is clearly designed for its pictorial qualities at f1.4 rather than outright sharpness.

Of special interest to seasoned Zeiss users:

"My image quality conclusion is that those concerned that the new Milvus design would rob the Milvus 35 of some of the “character” of the previous generation Distagon 35 is largely unfounded. The Milvus 35 at wide apertures has a nice mix of resolution on the plane of focus, a strong three dimensional rendering, and a highly pleasing defocused region. I seriously doubt that any shooter would be disappointed with the image quality that the Milvus 35 produces."

From Mr. Lloyd's site and based on the samples from Canon 35 f/1.4 II, Classic ZE 2/35 and Milvus ZE 2/35

The canon starts out sharp, sharper than both zeiss, wide open. I noticed on the milvus sample image on the left branches they look like they are vibrating not sure if there's a movement when he took the shot.

the other two are solid... canon and classic ZE.

The Classic / Milvus 2/35 is solid if you belong to the "Lateral CA can be corrected" school. Unfortunately for me, I prefer lenses that are also highly corrected for lateral CA. I am less sensitive to distortion.

Well, the Milvus 35/1.4 is on order now.
20% discount is quite something for these goods, and I was planning on buying it anyway.

I've read Lloyd's and Dustin's reviews, and have discussed with several members here by PM...but I'm hesitant to upgrade my 35/1.4 ZE without seeing shot-for-shot comparisons of wide-open bokeh at close range (flowers). One of Dustin's shots (grass) looks like it has slight onion rings. I love the ZE and, on one hand, wonder if I should even consider selling a lens that I love; on the other hand, if the Milvus retains all that the ZE has and also has better color correction and resolution, then it would be worthwhile to upgrade (at least for landscape use).

We all need to look hard at our 35mm options, probably the most individual of all FLs. The reviews from these two are very helpful but we all shoot in different conditions. It's a really good deal and it looks like the kind of lens you find is even better after some time with it. You can wait and see what comes out after some months of people you trust using it. I doubt you would regret buying in whenever you do so. If this was a Loxia, I'd be first in line, but we have an impoverished selection to choose from.

It's always tempting to fall in love with the new, but in this case it's an easier course to take. Color correction is very high on the list, you don't always notice because it's the absence of a effect. Soon enough, it will be mandatory for lenses at this price level to have near-APO. The layered soft bokeh Zeiss is getting these days is very attractive. Dustin also used the 5DIV I believe, a 5DSr test would be very illuminating as well. The MTF for the Milvus are absolutely top tier, so yes, you do get two lenses in one: the f1.4 look then ultra high, low curvature performance at f4 until diffraction.

Well, I caved and ordered it a few minutes ago. Couldn't resist the $300 discount, and it looks like a sure winner.

For anyone who may be interested...B&H has an almost-new used one for $1444 at the moment. I probably should have taken it, but I wanted one with a full warranty.
