Hmmm, I see the budget but what type of photography do you do?
For birding will that budget not cut it, not even second hand.
What lenses do you have now? To what reach do you go?

If you want or need beyond 300mm, that's when lenses can get very expensive. For most people the 70-300mm is a great choice, either Nikon or Tamron.

22-200 VR (can be had for next to nothing), 55-300VR, 70-300VR (FX lens also), AFP 70-300VR (very good lens but F6.3 is a bummer).

Increase your budget a bit and you can sometimes pick up a used 300 f4 AF-S for a bit over $600.00. No VR but still a great performer.

Excellent suggestion. Also, it works exceptionally well with the 1.4tcii.

True, but every one I've had needed a fine tune tweak (a feature unavailable on that series body)

The AFP is slightly better, but you lose 1/3 stop on the long end (F6.3 vs 5.6). The 70-300VR is a pretty good lens but it's 11 years old now, the newer 70-300 does a bit better with the high resolution DX sensors from what I gather. The only other thing is you need to turn VR on/off in the camera's menu for the AFP version, which is annoying but you will probably want it on 99% of the time anyway.

Understood but I have used mine on D1X, D70, D50, D200, 300, D3, D7200 and D800 with excellent results and no AF fine tune. As a matter of fact, I have yet to feel a need for AF fine tune for any lens. Just my $0.02 worth...

Same here. I owned two copies of the 300/4 AF-S and never needed to tune either of them across 3 different bodies - I would have sent them back if they did.
