If you are Poor, get the AF-P
If you are Sensible, get the AF-S

or as they sometimes say, buy cheap, buy twice.

I'd go AF-S. It's a proven (if not stellar) lens and it's FX - a nice benefit if you ever go full frame.

But, Thom Hogan has a few good things to say about the AF-P and you have one of the few bodies it plays well with. I read your other thread, we'll see what Mark has to say.

I've had VERY good results with the 70-300 AF-S VR lens---have not used the other 70-300 lens---I would spend the extra bucks for the VR lens. I am currently using the 80-400 AF-S VR lens, also with outstanding results...

Yes, AF-S is a known quantity but... Thom Hogan says the AF-P is an excellent lens and recommends it over the AF-S for a DX kit. In addition, the AF-S lens negates one of the primary (for me) reasons to own a DX camera - light and compact. Plus, you can routinely get the AF-P under $200. Two things I would check
a) does it have a plastic barrel - if yes then consider how actively you will be using it
b) does it have that annoying button on the barrel. When I bought a D5300 I bought the 18-55 AF-P, and while it is a very nice lens having to press that button and rotate the barrel every time you remove the lens cap is annoying as hell.

Can't comment on the AF-P, but the Tamron VC beats the AF-S at the long end. I had both; kept the Tammy. Cheap route to a decent 300mm.

The button is part of the "compact" equation for lenses that have it. Personally I did not find that to be an issue. Also if you don't like that step you can leave the lens extended. But not to worry the AF-P 70-300's do not collapse. That is only on the 18-55 version.

Tamron vs Nikon you can chalk that up to copy variation. Also many people don't AF Fine Tune lenses on bodies that offer that feature.
