p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 80D ?

Greetings,

I am considering a Canon 80D camera as an upgrade from a 30D. I also have a Canon 5D.

My interest is with wildlife photography, but of course the camera would be used for other purposes as well. I have a Canon 100-400 mk II lens.

I ask for opinions about the 80D because there is rather little mention of it on this forum. I will avoid the 7D mk ll due to the numerous statements about its variable performance.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

The 80D is good and has extra af options when using a 1.4x III TC with your 100-400 mk 2. No worries.

I have an 80D, and the 10-400 II (and the 1.4x III). I haven't used the 80D a whole lot yet, but so far I'm quite pleased. I never had a 30D, but I had a 40D, and I have no hesitation in suggesting that you'd be happy with the 80D.

The 80D is phenomenal, absolutely zero complaints. Newest Canon APSC sensor with great dynamic range and image rendering, flip screen, wi-fi, and a nice AF system. Makes an amazing duo with the 100-400 II, which is by far Canon's best lens (IMO). Takes the 1.4xIII TC well too.

Agree with the above statements, my 80D and 100-400 II make a wonderful combo including using the 1.4x III. The 80D has a wonderful feature set including motor driven mirror assembly, touch/flip LCD and live view phase detect AF via dual pixel sensor, 100% viewfinder with all cross type AF points, etc. Just a really nice camera to use. I'm going to be getting the new 35 mm IS macro for it so I can shoot in all kinds of weird positions.

I have the 7D2 and my wife has the 80D - the two are very close in performance so I would recommend the 80D without hesitation and if I were buying now, I would have to really think hard to justify the 7D2 over the 80D. For me, the next step up would be the 5D3 or (if AF was not particularly an issue) the 6D.

I have not found the 7D2 as variable as most internet chatter makes out. Yes, the AF can be jittery under some circumstances but that is because it is overall so much better than any other Canon APS-C. Buy either, but if you are shooting general plus a bit of wildlife, you will probably find the 80D more than you need. For a lot of wildlife plus a little general stuff, the 7D2 will be better.

Hi Tom...

I concur with everything said by the earlier posters in this thread. I had a 50D, 70D and now the 80D. Without doubt the 80D is a winner for price/features.

Here is an uncropped photo of a quail followed by a huge crop showing just the quail's head that was taken with the 80D and the 100-400 II...a superb combination in my view.

Thanks
Tom

It might just be you don't hear much about the 80D because people don't have issues with them. I have one as a holiday camera and it is clearly the best crop camera I have owned, with clearly the best crop sensor I have used.

You can't go far wrong with an 80D

Methinks he meant the EOS M6: same CMOS as 80D but fits in your pocket if you use a pancake and wear really loose jeans...

More likely the M5 IMHO, which is a sort of mini 80D

The 7DII rocks, and I'm sure the 80D must also.

The 80D is a great camera. Already mentioned is if you have 1.4TCIII you also get 27AF points that work at f/8 with the 100-400II. BUT the biggest issues with it is the ergonomics if you are more used to having a joystick for AF point movement (it doesn't). Also if you are used to having all the newest AF options like Spot and Expansion well it doesn't have those either.

But IQ is better than 7D2 at low ISO and equal at high-ISO. More MPs than 7D2 but you do lose a few FPS.
Better video use than 7D2 with the flipping screen.

Really good camera overall but despite my issues with the 7D2 AF, I'd still buy a 7D2 again over an 80D again if it was me.

I don't have either the 7D2 or 80D anymore but I do have an M5 which is like a mini 80D but not great for birds or quick moving wildlife as the 80D AF is much better than the M5.

Many thanks to you all for the helpful information.

I especially appreciate the detailed analysis by arbitrage.

I have ordered the 80D.

Good idea.

As a full frame pro user always on the lookout for a lightweight travel kit the 80D meets pretty much all my needs in conjunction with some nice light EF-S lenses.

No the IQ isn't quite as good as the FF cameras but it's still very good and plenty good enough, especially using the DLO feature in DPP on the RAW files, which does wonders.

I have owned many iterations of canon xxd, including the 20D, 40D, 60D, 70D, and now 80D, as well as the first 3 canon 5d.
I think the 80d remains one of the most well rounded cameras on the market and extremely capable.
the sensor is excellent in both low and high iso.
the video is fantastic.
the size and weight are perfect and the camera is very responsive.
The AF for motion tracking is good, but not stellar. My 5d3 still does a better job. Honestly, Canon has fallen a little behind here vs the 3d tracking of nikon. that makes it not the best will life/action camera, but still very good. even my 8 year old uses it very successfully with my 55-250 efs.

not in Captain Kirk's pocket. The mirrorless M6 and M5 share the same sensor as the 80D
(and with the 22/2 pancake lens it fits in my cargo pants pocket )
