I just took delivery of one today - I've been watching the Sigma outlet for a refurb 14mm f/1.8. Then one of these popped up on Monday for $4,000. Couldn't turn that down.

I'm going to try to take it out this weekend and do some birding, don't know what I'll see, but I'll have my D3s and D500 for impressions. The refurb did come with the normal accessories, which I was happy about. The backpack and all.

Any feedback about the lens, did you had chance to shoot with it?

Went out with it over the weekend twice. The first time, I hadn't yet done any AF adjustments, and it was front focusing. I did some quick in camera adjustments, and it improved, but there was little to see after that.

I did do proper AF adjustments the next day with the Sigma dock, and found a progressive front-focus with my D500. At the closest AF point, it was almost dead on, on my AF adjustment target, the 0 was in focus, but the circle of confusion was shifted a bit to the front, +2 centered it. At the second point it was +8 I think, then +10, then +15 at infinity.

So I definitely needed a dock (though it seemed much more consistent with my D3s - something that has always been the case with Sigma lenses, they're just WAY more consistent in their front/back focus with my D3s than anything else). But since calibration I've not really had anything to shoot with it.

I typically can find tons of birds where I live, so I was a bit annoyed that right after getting this lens, they all started hiding from me.

Hopefully I'll have some better impressions soon.

After doing tests with both the Tamron 150-600mm G2 and the Nikor AF-S 500mm ED F4D (non VR and not the MkII version)
I was surprised to find at 600mm @ F6.3 the contrast from the Tamron was much better, sharpness was also maybe in favour of the G2.
Best sharpness for the G2 is around F7.1-8 ......for the 500mm best is around F5.6, my version is an earlier version and was updated by the MkII, it's lighter and more than likely sharper than mine.
It still shoots good images at F4 though......really the only reason, I now own it!

With the snow I finally spent some time with the lens and an interesting subject.

I was shooting with my D3s, as it would have been too long with my D500. One of the biggest issues with that AF adjustment is that my D3s behaves differently than my D500. I did some in camera adjustment (I was offsetting front-focus on the D500 that didn't exist on the D3s) - so my first shots were OOF.

Furthermore, I've never used a lens of this girth before. These are hand-held, and while the lens is lightning fast, there was some user error. I'm definitely going to have to take the dogs to the back yard (and send the wife to the far side with them) a few more times to practice. But I was happy with end results overall.

My initial impressions with the lens are very positive, but I definitely need practice.

If anyone is in the market, there's an even cheaper than mine a month a half ago available over at the Sigma refurb store. It's $3,979. For reference, they charge $3,749 for the old f/4.5. Some of the Sigma outlet prices are outstanding, and some are kind of high. It's weird.

Anyway, my refurb came in brand new condition, in a new undamaged box, and with all paperwork, the backpack that it comes with, literally everything like a new lens.

I wish I had the funds right now, wrong time of year for me to be able to unload for this. I'll have to keep and eye out for later.

I did, I knew I had to jump on it fast. A couple weeks back there were at least two on there and I missed them by a few hours. Keep checking daily, I wasn't expecting another to be listed in their outlet so fast again.

So jealous of AvianScott...
I think that I will need to check the Sigma site more often. Please report back about the condition of the lens when it arrives,.. $4000 is a bargain when you realize how close this lens is to the quality of the Nikon FLE version.
