It's not Fall yet here in Central Indiana but the temps for the last week or two have certainly felt like it. As a result, some of the leaves have begun to change...not too many, but some have. There are areas of woods that have clearly begun to display Fall colors, and here in our neck of the woods some of the colors are beginning to show. Of course this weekend the temps soared back into the 80s...

Bank of HK. I had to wait about ½ hour for the moon to come out of the clouds.

At the peak, next time you can find the entrance of the small road call "Lugard Road", it is just right beside The Peak Tower (Peak Tram Station) and then walk for 20-30 minutes, you will find the best view for the Victoria Harbour, like below photo. You can then keep walking, the route is a circle, about one hour you will back to The Peak Tower. Many people doing jogging in the morning and evening

It certainly feels like fall at the highest elevations in WNC.

Here are the first few from my trip to High Tatras National Park at the beginning of September.

The Breath of High Tatras, I tried .... I tried... to Ryan Dyarize it but I simply couldn't find the right recipe in LR. Will try harder next time.

Turquoise Eye - same location as above. In extreme wind and about 4 degrees celsius in totally inappropriate short sleeves and thin jacket. It is the largest and deepest glacial lake in the Slovak part of High Tatras. I originally wanted to try another composition I saw elsewhere, but that would mean to contiue the climb even higher, which was out of the question in the clothes I had on me. Next time...

I like the composition in this a lot. And a free tip for nice looking water texture - bracketing + Lightroom HDR tool...

And totally unrelated photo from yesterday, that I posted in "Obsolete gear thread". Apologies if you've already seen it.

Taken today with lowly 40D and nifty fifty 50 f1,8 II. I use this setup to take product photos for my shop and I just had to try this one on black canvas that I got last year, but I haven't gotten around to use it yet.

The lighting was a simple LED light, coming from the left side. Aperture was f11 at close focus distance, so the further bottle is very slightly OOF. Focusing was done manually via LiveView, as the implementation of LV AF on 40D is abysmal. I also tried it at f2,2 but oof area was very distracting. Then I fiddled around a little in Lightroom plus I cloned out a lot of dust bunnies on the bottles, even though I dusted the bottles off beforehand. Dusting off the product is the key. It takes a minute, while the retouching can last 10's of minutes. And fingerprints are almost unclonable afterwards.

On Friday night I drove about 2 miles away from anyone to the middle of the Black Rock playa to watch the sunset. There was a lot of smoke in the air and it created an awesome show

Wow. I think we were up there the second time we were in HK. I think there is some type of temple up there. If we ever go back I'll make sure to follow your suggestion.

Tufas at Lake Winnemucca

The structures in the foreground are tufas. They are formed when hot water percolates up from geyers deep in the ground leaving mineral deposits. They can also be found at Mono lake. This is the South end of Lake Winnemucca. The lake dried out in the 1930's due to construction projects.

In case anyone's been wondering where I've been, the answer is simple: on vacation. This time, I've brought something wholly untypical for me. Long story short, I was visiting my home city, Vladivostok, to hang out with my parents and friends, as well as to help the former with certain problems in the household. By and large, the trip was a resounding success, and I managed to shoot in excess of 1600 pictures (which I'm now culling). Around 300 of those were spent within the space of 20 minutes on the subject seen below...
https://sun9-13.userapi.com/c639626/v639626170/4b501/_3-N2xbPVDE.jpg
Let me present you the Macroglossum Stellatarum moth, of the Sphingidae family. Its taxonomy was given away at once by the method it was feeding, very similar to a hummingbird. But since it's a daytime insect in a predominantly nocturnal family, precise identification was easy for a change. It's a widely spread species, occurring from Portugal to Japan.
http://pp.userapi.com/c840427/v840427170/efc4/VNTgmwZkhc4.jpg
Due to its fast and erratic flight pattern, shooting was very complicated for a relative newcomer like myself. I was using the 1D Mark 4 camera (what else) with the Tamron 70-300/4-5.6 VC lens throughout, the vast majority of the shots were done at f/5.6 and 300mm. Most are crops of varying severity from the lightly processed 16MP OOC JPEG files.
http://pp.userapi.com/c837137/v837137170/4e992/WT5-B8WKjYk.jpg
I'm not convinced of the results myself, to be honest. I felt like I was way out of my league on this one, but afterwards, when I started massacring shots by the dozen and my mother voiced her objections, I explained that I had to try my best if pushed into such a situation.
http://pp.userapi.com/c841531/v841531170/223a1/pXGSNVAc6GI.jpg
The lens was not at all cooperative (well... it's an $200 unit after all), especially with regard to focus speed. While I'm not willing to put it on the chopping block for this - it had performed admirably in most other duties I put it to - I have to concede that it's not yet ready for prime time (pardon the pun) by itself. However, I left the 70-200/2.8 L IS at home for a variety of reasons (one is weight, another is that it requires maintenance and I could not let it fail on me while I was in the middle of the journey).
http://pp.userapi.com/c840620/v840620621/e1dc/HjNnxpipCGA.jpg
The shots were made on Sep. 25th. The day, despite being so late in the year, was lovely. As have been (mostly) the other days of my journey. However, on the day of my departure, Oct. 1st, the weather was already so-so. When I arrived in St. Pete's, it was autumn in full stride. That blows...

P.S. A few images just refused to be hotlinked to unless I kept the https protocol. Go figure. I apologize for the confusion.
