I just received a 35 f2 from a seller here on FM.
Lens is in lovely condition, but in using it today on
my X-T2 it seemed to hunt focus several times
out of the few times I was able to try it out this evening.
Still lots of light, not dark, as we have long days now.

Is this something this lens tends to do?

It depends on what you are focusing on. Is there enough contrast in the subject?
Are you is AF-C or AF-S?

I am using this just like I have my 18 f2, 60 f2.4 and 50-230...
(as well as my myriad of other cameras and lenses)

Focused on a large variety of subjects in order to test the lens...
close to medium to a bit farther...even far...ran the gamut of distances.

Using AF-S...as well

There is an issue with your lens. The 35/1.4 is older and slower but the 35/2 should have fast and accurate AF. I only kept the 35/1.4 for the older style rendering

You might see if you have all the firmware updates to both camera and lens.

Ahhh... very good idea, Leighton

Will proceed to do that right now!

***update***
Just checked and both upgrades are in camera (s)
for lens and camera...

Perhaps I am being a bit harsh on this lens...

I went out this morning...
When it has to change focus from one distance
to another, it seems to bounce into position.
Perhaps I am just used to a "smoother" transition.
It does get focus today, and I tried it in varying light, shadow;
varying distances, close, far, mid...
I really want to like this lens. It is so small and in quite lovely condition.

I had two copies of the 35mm f2. The first had a more pronounced focus breathing on my XT1(bouncing into position as you describe). My current copy has a little less but it's still there and I've accepted it to be normal behaviour for this lens.

I don't have this lens, but a friend does, and noted similar behavior as stated above. He says it just focuses "differently".

Thank you for your replies...

Now I wonder if this is "normal" for this lens? I wonder if all the 35's act this way.

I have heard of focus breathing, but did not know what it was. Perhaps I have now
experienced it...

Out of all my Nikon lenses over the years I never had one act this way, so
this has thrown me a bit. I just got in, so I will look at my pictures and see
how they look...

I've checked my lens this morning. In a relatively dim room it settles on focus reasonably quickly. In a moderately lit room, it's almost instantaneous. I don't think what you're describing is "focus breathing". I've always understood that to be a slight change in focal length (magnification) as you focus. It's more obvious when the lens bounces between near and far when trying to get to critical focus. In other words, maybe a symptom but not a cause. My lens seems to leap into focus rather than bounce.

Hm... focus breathing refers to changes in angle of view as the plane of focus changes. That's really a factor of how the lens elements are made and interact with one another as the lens focuses, so it really should not vary from copy to copy. However, if you have a malfunctioning lens, it might hunt a lot (which is not the same as focus breathing). The 35 f2 should have pretty snappy focus. I'm glad you got the return worked out with the seller.

Ok... this sounds quite interesting. Wonder why a lens would do this: focus breathe
if it is not designed so... ?

The elements within the lens move back and forth relative to one another to produce an in-focus image. This movement can alter the optics of the resultant image, and when the angle/field of view (a.k.a. focal length) is altered, it is referred to as focus breathing.

Focus breathing is usually most apparent in zoom lenses but it does happen in prime lenses as well. Most people don't even notice it, but I guess, once you do, you can't stop noticing it
