The larger image is slightly cropped, the other about 30-40% off

Thanks bob. When assessing images it is good to know how much cropping has been done.

The "DIF" shots are awesome!

I had sharper results with fewer focus points but more misses, so this is a mix of 5, 9 and all points. As you use more points, the

Thanks Bobby and Birdie! FWIW, I was surprised at the high percentage of keepers with the test I did.

Gave the hummingbirds a go again yesterday. Tried several setting as suggested . When using 5 or 9 points, I found the focus would grab the closest thing to the lens which usually was not the hummer . Plus the hummers are not that different in color than the foliage. Single point seemed to work the best when they were in close proximity to foliage. My challenge was keeping the focus point on them.

Lighting in the garden changes frequently from one extreme to the other , so used Auto ISO and fill flash.

One thing that was most bothersome for me was the camera going to sleep . That second or two for it to wake up meant missing a lot of initial focus attempts. I finally found were I could turn off going to sleep

Also, I kept reading that exposure compensation does not work in Manual. Much to my surprise it works in manual with Auto ISO as you can see from the Exif on the shots.

Your suggestions are most appreciated.

Birdie

Beautiful shots Birdie! I would guess single point would be best, otherwise af might grab foliage or the wings but I haven't done much of this so I'm not much help.

You guys are funny sometimes!

Birdie, I do, if I may be so bold, have a suggestion- print that last hummer in metal and hang it on the wall !!
