I think it must be grey market... I'll give you $1000 for it .
On a serious note: My understanding is Nikon is not consistent regarding prefixes, they may shift inventory around or simply elect to not use the US prefix, as long as the lens comes in a gold box, USA warranty card in it along with a receipt from adorama etc you should be covered.
