Other issue is F4... open enough??

NO. WAY.

I'd want 85mm f1.4 or Sigma 135mm f1.8 plus 70-200mm f2.8.

BTW... basically starting with zero knowledge about cameras... she has a canon Rebel of some sort.... but I'm sure she only shoots in auto.

So get her a good lens for the Rebel (whatever Canon has in 70-200 f/2.8), then show her how to put it in aperture priority with a fixed ISO and spot metering. Or just full-manual (which is how I would shoot a recital) - show her how to read the exposure meter, chimp, and take it from there. Knowledge is a lot more powerful, useful, and less expensive than a new DSLR.

If she's wealthy, then get her the D750+70-200mm f/2.8 Nikon combo everyone is talking about, and still how her how to use it. But if she was, then you wouldn't be talking about a budget.

The lens recommendation of course depends on where she'll be in relation to the stage. But 70-200 is a good starting point, and 2.8 is fast enough for most things.
