I'm no expert on making selections but I think selecting the complete weapon and the commander and inverting it to then reduce the saturation a little like you said and maybe reducing the clarity to make the BG softer as well? I'm not sure what Kent is seeing but to me it's the skin, brass on the weapon and shirt color competing with the same color tone shown on the tent material and other things in the GB?
Actually, I've always kinda liked IR images on certain subjects. It doesn't always work for my taste but on many of your shots you have nailed them IMHO. This image being one of them and that other water shot you recently posted.
I will confess that I'm not normally a fan of the "sepia ?" IR toning and typically prefer the classic blue sky and snow white leaves IR look. But again, with this image, I find it very engaging and appealing.
Where you start to lose me, in the IR world, is when you convert them into B&W's or close to it. To my eyes I have a hard time separating or seeing the depth. Not on every image though so I suspect it has to do with the subject matter. I don't know if this is because of my vision issue or if normal people see it like that as well.
