p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · got my Sony A9 today

I did it and paid enough that I could have got a spare kidney for later in life, you never know...

however:

a test I like to do about AF is this:

I start a timer and then focus between two points for and back 20 times as fast as I and the camera can. I then stop the time and repeat with another camera...

The challenge: 50 mm lens, f 1.8, light: 1/200 sec at ISO 6400 (pretty dark)
Nikon D750 with 50/1.4 D vs Sony A9 with 55/1.8

Nikon: 14,5 sec

Sony A9 10.2 sec!

WOW!

I'm having a hard time understanding your test. Can you make a video?

Doesn't seem like a valid test without using the same lens? Nice it's quicker i guess though.

who cares? I donīt. With the Nikon set-up I was happy with the AF speed.

Now itīs faster, all I need to know.

It is not important which came focusses "faster" though. What counts is, is it fast enough.

Is the Nikon d750 lacking in focus speed? I can honestly say I've ever missed a shot due to slow focus!

I can't imagine focus speed being a reason to upgrade to the a9? Am I missing something?

Useful to know that Sony has something that can AF as well (or better?) than the D750. I'd welcome such AF in my A7, but I won't pay what they are asking. So who wants to buy me a new camera? Anyone?

Plus Nikons are backwards Chuck, everyone knows that. I can barely take lenses off a Nikon camera, let alone use one effectively

D750 isn't lacking in focus speed, but the 50mm f/1.4d that he used for the test is .

Sure if the intent is to test either a camera or a lens. If the test is to compare *systems* then it seems valid to me.

Heiko had a Nikon setup and now knows how a Sony setup compares to it for his uses. That's all.

No, of course is the focus speed not a reason to upgrade.

However, until now, focus speed prevented me from switching to Sony for good.

The size, the small lenses, the EVF, the overall performance it what drags me to Sony.

Finally Sony and therefore mirrorless catches up with top notch DSLR autofocus.

I tested them all (nearly) but the A9 has the fastest C-AF in the market in reasonable good light.

Valid point, still the 50/1.4 D is plenty fast.

another test:

light level: 1/250, 2.8, ISO 1000

D750 35/1.8G: 10 sec.

A9 with 35/2.8: 7.2 sec.

I had the feeling the Sony was faster then I could switch cameradirection and press focus button.

Oh, eye -AF is an amazing thing.

Still think it's wickedly overpriced for what it is.

Looking forward to some hype-free reviews.

Can you please check the ISO 100 potential banding issue? https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1492373/1 this would be a non-starter issue for me.

Also the number of people in here trying to confirm their own biases is rude and a bit bizarre.

I did not know about that. Thank you for pointing that out Jeremy.

I went out and did some shots of my hand against the setting sun.

It is JPEG right out of the camera. LR does not support the A9 yet (or does it? but not mine, at least)

First I thought, nope, no, there isnīt anything. But when you look hard at 100 crop you can see it. In the last image the JPEG file is pushed to clarity 100. Now its quite visible.

Not sure if that is pixel peeping or if it will show up in prints. I usually donīt print larger then album, still not so nice...
