p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Loving my 50mm 1.4D

As a general rule 50mm lenses have never caught my fancy but when a like new Nikon 50mm 1.4D lens came available from a local seller for $60 I couldn't pass it up. A couple days later my grandson came over and I threw it on my D7000 for a test drive. I do think it will end up getting a lot of use.

I've been considering one. I already have a 1.8D though, not really sure if it's worth it.

I really do like my 1.8D it's one of my most used lenses.

I sold my 1.8D to pay for the 1.4 and had money left over. Back in my film days I had a series E 50mm and then have had a 1.8D for a while. The E lens was pretty nice but I never really took to the D series lens.

I have one, I think it is my 3rd one. I had to try the 1.8G and 1.4G versions, and the Sigma Art, but keep coming back to the 50/1.4 AF-D because it is small and reliable. For pure artistry wide open, the Zeiss Milvus 50/1.4 is hard to beat, but with kids running around, the AF comes in handy.

The 50 f/1.4d is lovely, in some limited and very specific shooting conditions. Mostly though, I found it to be a *bleh* lens.

On the other hand, it is a real gem if you've only got $60 in it. Enjoy.

Nice! For $60, definitely an awesome deal. I'm still in regret that I didn't buy one at my local camera shop for $85! (sighs!) Definitely a really decent lens for what it is too.

In your view, what would be those specific conditions and contexts?

Overcast with no strong light sources, but still ample light. Controlled studio light as well maybe.

I love 50 1.4D. I also have tried virtually all other 50mm. I came back to 1.4D for small size, peasant rendering and fast AF. It is not perfect, but no lens is. We have to pick for the balance we want. And 50 1.4D certainly has its niche.

It's an amazing lens! I just purchased it brand new (alongside the 105mm f2D DC). They just create such a lush, lifelike image so long as you stop them down at least one full stop (f2.8 on the 50D is just as sharp as anything and yet it has better color and micro-contrast than most other lenses).

The 105mm starts getting really good at 2.8 and improves from there.

As you stop down the bokeh gets much better also.

The 50D/105D is my alternative to the 58/105G lenses and since I prefer shooting at 2.8 or smaller I actually much prefer them for the beautiful micro-contrast and color.

Had much problems with mine.
Having white background or lights behind a person it produces blue flares.
Very noticable if the person wears dark clothes.
Wedding portraits at bright windows brings flat lowcontrast results.

No problems and very crisp in all other conditions.

After buying a 50 Art, all problems are gone.
