p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Catbird

I visited the West Pond of Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge as they have finaly repaired the breach Hurricane Sandy created that took out the trail and turned the pond into a lagoon. It was a stunning day here in New York City and the park was full of people which was rather annoying as they kept scaring the birds. I photographed this catbird from the west pond blind. I cloned out a few brights spots in the background of the first. I had to dig the shadows out of the third as my flash did not fire.

I like catbirds Morris, and I like these- #3 is great but too bad about the flash.

...I stopped using flash for catbirds in particular (then in general too) because their eyes seem more reflective than other birds eyes... #2 and #4 have the blueish-greyish blob in the eye, a particular blob I used to get with every catbird I shot with a flash. Hmmm...... Could be other attenuating factors, who knows.

...Regardless, great shots and fun actions!

I like your up=close work as well as your beach scenes, Morris - was this with the 15--600? You and Karl Witt have that baby figured out.

Thank you Jess,
I'd never noticed the blue gray blob. Now I'll have to write a science fiction movie!

Thank you David,

15-600mm, now wouldn't that be something!

I believe Karl has the Contemporary model while I have the sport. Fromt the first time I used the Sport I was getting great results. The only thing I had to figure out was how to attach it safely and balanced to my BlackRapid RC-7 without interfering with tripod mounting and that did not take that long

Morris,
Love number 4!
Do you find that using a flash tends to startle the birds, or is it something they take in stride? I have yet to try it on birds.

Cheers
Dan

The first and the last are my picks Morris. Nice work minus the alien in the eye caused by the flash.

Fun set of these cheery cacklers, Morris. We have loads of catbirds here and have since I started messing around with bird photography but I've never seen on bathing before. I appreciate you giving me my first look!

Thanks for posting.

Thank you Dan,
The only reaction I've seen is some birds blink

Maybe birds are more sound oriented.?? I certainly have MUCH better luck photographing birds close up with my E-M1 (I orII) in silent mode than in normal mode, or compared to a DSLR. Many has been the time when I have shared a hide with DSLR users that simply scare them off.
Have to think about the fill in flash idea.

Some birds don't seem to care about the sound of a shutter while others fell on the fist click. They may already be on alert when the shutter goes off and that's the last warning there willing to take. The more people in a blind the more sound, movement and smells are going to warn them of danger

My guess is that sudden movements and sounds are natural danger signals to them, as are changes in the environment, something there that wasn't before, whereas a flash is something totally unknown so they don't react the same way.
