p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sigma 100-400 C Anyone?

Hi all,

Are you after the new Sigma 100-400? It is slow and short, I know... Sigma is claiming "crazy sharp" in their press release for current availability. Obviously this is marketing speak, but Sigma's "sharp" standard has recently been notable.

...Worth it for a featherweight/crop/mirrorless bird lens? Please share your thoughts and experiences. Ideally these will be rolling into people's hands shortly.

Early reviews:

Camera Labs

...Looking like a reasonable improvement over its predecessors, but not a "crazy" showstopper thus far.

Does it have any predecessors? The 70-300 and 100-300 lenses are in a different class, as is the Canon 100-400.

This seems like a fairly unique offering - better image quality and more reach than the 70-300 type lenses, but lighter and cheaper than the Canon 100-400, Nikon 80-400, and 150-600 lenses.

From the samples looks to be on par with the 150-600 lenses, though we'll see what the more detailed reviews say. Personally, even it sounds like a winner to me - a great walk-around telephoto and inexpensive upgrade to the 70-300. I'll stick with my 200-500 since I don't need this kind of lens, but I'm constantly talking to people who want a lens like this new Sigma.

But yeah, optically it looks good but nothing crazy extraordinary - can't retire the 400mm f2.8 lenses just yet...

I was thinking of the "ancient" 100-300 f4 hsm, 80-400 OS, 120-400 OS, 150-500 OS lenses- and I am sure you are correct this is a "niche-filling" lens, not a 400 2.8 replacement .

I took the cardinal photo from DPR raw sample gallery. The sample is significantly sharper than my tamron 150-600 at the long end @ f8. Seems sharp enough...

I've had the new Sigma 100-400 for about two weeks now and am very impressed with its performance on both full frame (Nikon D800 & D750) and crop sensor (D7100). It's much lighter than my Nikon 200-500VR (which I had to leave in Australia due to weight restrictions, so it's replacing it while I'm in Canada), has similar sharpness and is about half the size.... it's turning out to be a nice lens to add to my kit. A few samples follow...
