Interesting way to frame it, Romy. My top-three list is:

1. Damage
2. IS/USM failure
3. Left behind/stolen

I'm my own worst enemy, when it comes to dropping, throwing, dunking, and otherwise damaging equipment. I've had IS and/or USM fail at least three times (twice for reason 1), but none were "big white" lenses.

Ten years ago, fungus would have been number two on the list, but I've since bought a dry cabinet, and I don't accept used lenses with fungus or haze in them.

Hmmm, have you lost some gear due to accident, Jim? I've lost one (EFS 55 -200) a long time ago when I carried my bag from the car and I didn't notice that it was open. The lens fell to the concrete pavement with a horrible sound, and broke into two pieces.

As far as my most notorious lens killer is concerned, I've lost my 100-400 IS, 400 5.6L and 100 2.8 USM macro to fungus.

Interestingly, I also lost my 300D to flooding.

1. Fungus
2. Accident/theft

I will say I have only been an idiot once (well, on a regular basis elsewhere but I digress) and left my 300D on a bench in Himeji, Japan in 2005. When I returned an hour later, it was still there. A local photographer doing group shots for tourists, said he noticed it, looked at the menus, which were in English, figured it was a tourist, and let it sit there until I returned. Only in Japan would a thousand dollar camera sit on a park bench untouched. Amazing.

I also dropped a 70-200mm at a store. But that was because the salesperson handed me the lens and I grabbed it by the tripod foot, and of course, the previous salesperson hadn't tightened it. It slipped out and hit the floor and bounced. If you ever wondered what a 70-200mm f2.8L IS sounds like when it hits the floor, it sounds hollow. The room also sounds very silent.

Since then I've been pretty good at not leaving anything behind and avoiding thieves, but you never know. I'm sure I'm due for something soon.

What makes you say that ?

Here's an accounting, starting in about 1974.

Broken by me: 8 lenses & 1 camera, incl. EF 35/1.4L, EF 70-200/2.8L IS (both repaired), and new 1.4x III (replaced)

Water damage: 1 lens and 1 Canon 5D (repaired, OK for a year or so, then into garbage)

Fungus:
- cleaned, 6 lenses, incl. Fuji GS645S Wide 60
- garbage, 5 lenses,
- returned, 3 lenses, incl. -R Apo-Telyt 180/3.4

Left behind/stolen: 4 cameras (2 in 1970's and 2 this year), plus one attempted hoist of 6D + 24-105L IS in Madrid subway, foiled by yours truly.

Returned for scratched glass, not done by me: 3 lenses, incl. M645 A 300/2.8 APO scratched on inner element during service (after 6 mo. negotiation, repair shop "bought" it from me for Lens$db value).

This makes me feel less bad about my fungus losses.
