I agree, I worried about that as well. The first time I shot with my 300mm, I used a monopod, but the vibration from the outboard went through the hull and right up to the camera. So I only shoot hand held.
When not shooting, I put the camera/lens in a "crib", which is a wooden box I made lined with 3/4" packing foam. It's long enough for a body plus 300 and extender and I hope it reduces the effects of vibration from the engine. It also makes handing the entire setup to someone on the dock a lot easier.
My other idea was to buy a giant Pelican for it, but it seemed rather expensive and more difficult to manage.
I'm hoping these little precautions keep my lens healthy for several more years, I'm always a little scared as it was a lot of money for me
