p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Meetup with (and a big thanks to) KD

Spent a weekend in Florida with KD, who reached out to me originally to ask about snail kites. This time I skipped the snail kites (but I'm sure KD will have some great images), and the two of us spent a day with some delightful Burrowing Owl families, and a morning looking for shorebirds, but finding only skimmers.

Great fun to meet another FM'er in person and benefit from KD's generosity, passion for wildlife photography, and propensity to tell stories about other FM'ers (you know who you are).

Greg

Hey Greg, great to see you out shooting and posting... I've always really enjoyed your work.
Love the first two images, it looks like the Juvie on the left is the character, and the other one tolerates him.
I'm a sucker for Skimmers and you captured two great in-flights, cool to see the beach and waves in the BG.
Terrific JBOIF with wonderful view of the talons, and good wing position and head angle.
Excellent work from what must have been a great weekend.

The youngsters are definitely adorable, but the IF shot of the juvenile is the best here.

What made you decide to shoot at F8 instead of F4 or F5.6?

Hey, Kirk, great to hear from you; I'm always out shooting but I confess that my ratio of FM lurking/posting has gone up dramatically! (Love the Peregrines by the way). Take care and thanks so much for stopping by.

Thanks, Mike! I couldn't agree more about the "pretty quick" part (I have about 10 times more frames with clipped parts).

Ah, Don...I can see you value technical expertise over cuteness! (not really, but I agree--I was really thrilled to get a decent IF image).

Thanks, Chris! Everyone is different (of course), but I generally will use f/8 (for a bit more DOF) as long as I can get away with a decent ss (depends of course on subject/action) and iso (depends of course on sensor). For this trip, I also brought along a 5dsR, and for the owls I kept switching back and forth between the two bodies--light was pretty good so for stationary shots the 5dsR was fine at f/8.
