Hi, does anyone know which lens hoods fit the 600mm f4d afs version 1 non vr?
I know the original is the HK-23-1 and -2 which I can't find anywhere.
For example, my old 300mm 2.8d afs version 1 can take the same hood as the 200-400mm f4.
Thank you!

Thank you TNTCorp, I actually checked their product for my 300 2.8, I just don't like how different they look.
Before I got a HK-30 for my 300, I made a homemade hood with a 100 cd spindle which I painted with chalkboard black paint on the inside and then I wrapped it on carbon fiber.
It actually looked pretty good, but I still wanted the stock look.
I really don't understand why Nikon charges so much for their hoods.
$600 for the vr hood is crazy; I might have to make one out of aluminum and then wrap it on carbon fiber again.
oh well...

for the price nikon is charging, imagine how you would feel when the hood became out-of-round after an accidental contact with a railing or wall.

the aquatech is collapsible and can take a beating.

or, like you said, the diy approach is the most economical and functional but doesn't have the oem look.

i still like the diy leather hood i saw on a 500 not too long ago. :-)

i would prefer functional over look. and if it looked bad, my gears will not attract the eyes of thieves :-)

My diy on the 300mm 2.8

I ended up buying the one for the 200-400 since it was the same size.
I didn't my the barrel, but the way it connected and detached is where you could tell it was a cd spindle.

Possibly the one that fits the same generation 400 f2.8.

ok, so far this is all i found out:

AF-I 600MM F4 HK-18 400MM 2.8 HK-20
AF-S 600MM F4 HK-23 400MM 2.8 HK-25
AF-S II 600MM F4 HK-29 400MM 2.8 HK-27
AFS Vr 600MM F4 HK-35 400MM 2.8 HK-33

I wonder if the 400mm 2.8 would fit the 600mm f4 by series.
and/or
If the af-i, af-s, af-sii, vr would interchange with each other.

i cant find an hk-23 anywhere.
I saw videos of the aquatech soft hood and lenscoat travel hood hoods and they are very flimsy, dont keep round, and very often show vignetting on the 600, doesn't seem to affect the 400 for what ever reason.

Im interested on that leatherhood you mentioned tntcorp.
I dont know what material would bend nicely and be strong enough like an original hood yet.
Thanks again everyone.

as long as the diameter of the front element are the same, i don't see why the hood will not fit, diameter-wise. the only risk would be vignetting if you didn't used hoods of designated part number.

a wildlife photog had passed through my area. he made the leather hood from a sheet of cowhide cuts to size. the sheet was roll into a tube and joined at the edges by a piece of extrude brass or aluminum fitting, uses to connect rain gutter. the fitting can be found at any local hw stores.

btw, i have a 400/2.8 af-s version 1 with the 2-pieces carbon hood in pristine condition. if you buy the lens, i'll throw in the hood for free.... :-)

cannot recall how it is attached to the lens, but the hood slipped into the lens' groove, and he wrapped a velcro strap on the exterior.

very clean and effective hood, it stayed put in 25mph gust w/out issue during my time with him. :-)

i believed all af-s version of telephotos have a 2-pieces hood.

all af-s vr telephotos, i.e. g-lenses, have 1-piece hood.

Take a look at the folding hood from Lenscoat. It works very well and the same hood fits the 500mm f/4 and 600mm f/4 lenses. I like it for travel as it makes these lenses more compact.

I switched from the VR I to the FL and this lens is so much better in every aspect. Sharpness, contrast, backlight behaviour, AF-Speed and VR. I directly felt in love with this lens.

Here you can find a short comparison with the VR I. Sorry, it's only in German.

Done,
Homemade, $20
Carbon fiber wrap, felt contact paper inside, plastic screws.
Found a piece of acrylic at work which is a bit bigger, but I compensated by installing longer screws.
No more hand holding this thing thou.

I have the Aquatech for my 400mm F2.8 VR (as well as their lens plug). It is not flimsy.

HI,

I saw a used HK-23 hood on Ebay. I don't know if this is the one you are looking for.
