as long as the diameter of the front element are the same, i don't see why the hood will not fit, diameter-wise. the only risk would be vignetting if you didn't used hoods of designated part number.
a wildlife photog had passed through my area. he made the leather hood from a sheet of cowhide cuts to size. the sheet was roll into a tube and joined at the edges by a piece of extrude brass or aluminum fitting, uses to connect rain gutter. the fitting can be found at any local hw stores.
btw, i have a 400/2.8 af-s version 1 with the 2-pieces carbon hood in pristine condition. if you buy the lens, i'll throw in the hood for free.... :-)
cannot recall how it is attached to the lens, but the hood slipped into the lens' groove, and he wrapped a velcro strap on the exterior.
very clean and effective hood, it stayed put in 25mph gust w/out issue during my time with him. :-)
