I saw the female settle on a plant and adopt a receptive pose. A male hovered over her. For the uninitiated, only the male has the orange tips to its wings. This species flies and mates in our garden every year but I have yet to find eggs or larvae.
By the time I returned with my camera the male had gone and the female was airborne. She then started to feed on the nectar of various garden flowers. I was pleased that the first plant she visited was the larval foodplant, Jack By The Hedge or Garlic Mustard Alliaria petiolata. (All arial parts of the plant are edible uncooked, as a salad constituent).
I decided to go for daylight exposures in the sunlight. After the visit to the Alliaria she moved to the flowers of Honesty, very attractive to nectar-feeding insects.
Olympus EM-1, Olympus 4/3 50mm macro, hand-held. F11 at ISO 400.
I started with AF but found it wasted too much time and changed to MF.
