p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Anybody got the 85mm 1.8G and the 85mm 1.4G?

Hi all,

I currently have my eye on the 85mm f/1.4G.

I've had the 1.4G in the past, on my D3's I didn't find it sharp, that being said I didn't find the 35mm 1.4G sharp on my D3's. Since upgrading to the D750 i've found the 35mm 1.4G razor sharp, it's like a new lens and I'm wondering if things will be the same with the 85mm f/1.4G.

I currently have the 85mm 1.8G, awesome lens and sharp but I miss the micro contrast and rendering of the high end primes. Especially when I shoot my 35mm 1.4G and 85mm 1.8G side by side.

I'm really interested to hear other users experience with newer bodies and the 85mm 1.4G.

Thanks in advance
Mike

I've enjoyed the 1.4G on a D800e for the past 4 or so years. Never had any complaints about lack of sharpness – although I can't say the same for CA. I can definitely say it's been my most-used prime, and I have a few.

Due to a gear shuffle, however, I recently traded away the 1.4 and received a 1.8G. I haven't used the 1.8 enough to fully familiarise myself with it as of yet, but I can say from my initial playing-around that I'm highly impressed. Sharpness seems on a par, and to my eyes, the bokeh is not hugely inferior. I was initially planning on passing along the 1.8 quite quickly, possibly in favor of the 105 1.4, but I'm thinking now that it deserves to stick around for a while in my bag.

Thanks Chris.

It's almost certainly a case of 'your customers won't tell any difference', but can I convince myself not to upgrade.

I doubt it.

Owned three of 1.8G and two of the 1.4G. If you land on a good copy of 1.4G, you're a lucky man; mine had inconsistent focusing on both 1.4G's....
I REALLY wanted to love it. So I definitely recommend the 1.8G (based on my experience)

I have both. The 1.4 is great when it nails focus but in lower light it seems to struggle. The 1.8 is just a solid performer all around.

I own both 1.4G and 1.8G, but after acquiring the 105E. The 1.4G is staying on the shelf.

I would get the 105E if I were you.

105e aside. What are your thoughts in the 85's? 😊

I was able to demo both in a camera store.

I'd get the 1.8. I find it produces images that are near indistinguishable, focuses a bit more reliably, and costs a considerable amount less.

(used on a D750, results may vary on your camera)

The original 1.4G was shelved as soon as I got the 1.8G as it is sharper and lighter. Bokeh wise the 1.4G is a step ahead but at the price of aberrations of some kind.

It saddens me to say that the 85/1.4G has no more place in the line up with the 85/1.8G and the 105E.

I really should sell it but keep it for old companionship..

I have the 85mm F1.8G. Very nice. DXOMARK really likes it. I am currently using it on a DX body and the F100. I have always liked the 85mm focal lens for both indoor studio and outdoors pics. It is versatile in that way. Does not flare, in my experience, which is a big plus for me.
