It's quite a while the D800 came to life and since I got the 85/1.8 a couple years ago it's almost glued on the camera, I don't mind too much about if the bokeh of the 1.4 or the D version is better or not, I just love the combo and this morning I took with me also the 60G Macro and the Sigma 150/2.8 Macro and was astonished at how sharp the 85 is even compared to a macro lens; no, of course I don't like a lens just because of sharpness but for some kind of photography, in the matter taking male portraits, I love a lens to be sharp whilst I wish I could afford a 58G for female portraiture but still can't...

Really nice shot. I have and love my 85mm 1.8. Great, sharp lens. It is on my camera most of the time.

I have a D810, D750, D500.
I own the 105 1.4E, 58 1.4G, and a few other lenses.
But I recently bought a used 85 1.8G. It's waiting for me at my office, while I'm traveling for a gig.
I am going to try out a new lightweight kit of 1.8G lenses.
I hear the 85 1.8G is quite sharp, even at 1.8.
I really don't think my customers will notice the lack of ultra smooth bokeh compared with the 105.
we shall see how it goes.

very nice shot

It is. I find the bokeh pleasing but not 105/1.4 pleasing, it is quite sharp though even at f1.8.

Plenty of good examples in the thread for this lens: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1447752/0

I know what you mean.
I did own the 85 1.4G and 58 1.4G at the same time, and when the 105 came out, sold the 85. I did have a special place in my heart for it. but it was a little soft at 1.4.

I may shake up my prime lineup
and go from 24/58/105
to 20/35/85

I'll check out the thread, cheers

Again, once I mount the 85 I think I need no more lenses...
