Just realized my Nikon 200-500 lens will not focus within my house! I had not used it within the house, so for the heck of it I gave it a go yesterday to photo my Granddaughter Lilly. The lens will no auto focus with either the D500 or D810. Fact is it will not hunt for focus, it simply does nothing in room light! I point it out the window and the lens snaps into instant focus, turn back to Lilly and it's as if the camera is in off position. I manual focus and snapped a few photos.
Surely this is not a concern to others, as I have not read anything about this.
Attached a crop from a snap, f8 @ 500mm, D500 camera. It's sharp, but what the hell is going on with the dead in the house auto focus?
Hope my babbling did not bore you to near death.

Are you too close (i.e. inside MFD) which is 7.2ft (2.2m)? Also make sure you don't have the limiter on infinity to 6m or that would certainly have issues indoors.

15 foot distance. But, I can point the camera across the room and down the hall, no focus movement in Auto focus.

As with arbitrage, the first thing I would check is the focus limiter, that's really the only thing I can think of that would stop it from autofocusing at close range indoors.

Make sure the actual AF limiter on the side of the lens isn't on, not just checking MFD.

Mine focuses no problem indoors and even in poor light (ISO 12,800 f5.6 1/80 sec exposure required) on my D810.

arbitrage, AvianScott and CanadaMark

Finally after all the suggestions of the limiter switch, I checked it. Hanging my head, I had it set to focus 6 meters and onward. Now on full it will focus. Thanks
