p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sigma 85mm f1,4 ART - have you switched from your Canon 85mm f1,2 II?

I recently tried out the new Sigma 85mm Art and must say I was really impressed. Not only was it just as sharp or sharper than my Canon 85 f1,2 II and with less or no CAs but it was also easied and faster to focus and actually much more consistent. It looks like a big time winner from Sigma. Even the bokeh looks lovely. It addresses both the issues the Canon has- AF and CAs. Im switching. What about you? Any thoughts and experiences welcome

Is it actually confirmed?? See on all rumours. I shoot a lot of low light. Need new 85mm got old sigma 85mm 1.4 but just don't trust arts focus problems and Tamron great lens but need that extra light

The 85LII is fine for me, for now. Shooting at around f/2 fixes a lot of the issues.

f/1.2 is just too unreliable.

If the 85 1.4L has a build/wide open performance of the 35L II, what a combo that will be. A 50 1.4L with the same ethic would be welcome just as much (if not more).

I'm over the CA of the 1.2's. Slows down processing (and often shots look weird when you remove the CA), and if I have to shoot at 2 what's the point of having such a heavy+fast lens.

Yeah, I find it odd it's even in the same discussion as the sigma lens.

Honestly, I'd rather shoot with lightweight Nikkor 1.8's (I love that set), but if Canon's going to go with 1.4's I can live it it (and pay for it, gulp).

Whatever it is just make it sharp and CA free wide open. The 35L II hopefully is the new mojo.

For me, the "look" coming off the 85LII @ f2 is a night and day difference compared to the 70-200 @ 2.8 @~85mm

Try the Tamron wide open at 1.8 ... all things considered, I lost my lust for the L.

Thanks for your replies, guys. I sold the 85mm f1,2 yesterday and Im getting the Sigma tomorrow. After trying it out I "lost my lust" for the L 85mm, as LeeSimms says You just cannot shoot the 85mm L wide open or near wide open without correcting the CA. The Sigma looks clean at f1,4...Not totally but certainly fine for most uses. And the Af! I never thought AF was going to be a strength of a Sigma lens Hope I get a great copy tomorrow. But the guys at the store said theyve sold loads of them and have had zero complaints about it. Looking forward to it. And yes, the 85mm f1,4 L from Canon will certainly be even better but its going to cost twice as much if not more..

I tried the Sigma a while ago since a friend has it (for Canon). Seems like a great little (ok, well, rather big) lens!

Unfortunately after a couple of weddings and thorough testing it seems he's having issues with focus accuracy on other than center points (FoCal seems to indicate different AFMA values for these specific types of points (a difference up to as big as 10 points). I am in the market for a top 85, but think will hold out for the Canon and actually happily pay double the price.

I used Canon and Sigma 85 1.4 Art and bought the Art. I had alot of issue with Art AF, but once calibrated in camera, it's better. For weddings, I still take a couple extra just in case I miss focus especially at 1.4.

It is worth the pain of using the dock to make sure af is as good as it can be.

You have decide that based on the pain you feel looking at how many shots you "missed".

So Im back from "the real world" and have used the Siggy 85mm Art for two jobs- a family shoot and a wedding. Im very happy with the lens! For both jobs I used only the 85 Art and the 24-35 f2 Art + just a few shots from the Tamron 45 f1,8 VC (a very nice lens as well). I must say this is a very sweet combo and Im very happy with both these Sigmas- sharp at all f- stops and the Af is actually really good. Very few misses- certainly much fewer that I used to get with the Canon 85mm f1,2...And you know what? I didnt miss my 70-200 f2,8 at all. Strange, I thought I couldnt go to a wedding without it When I have something to show Ill get back.

I didn't use the dock but I did use in camera calibration. It was tedious tethering to a laptop to get critical focus but it works great. I'm thinking of invest in FoCal software to calibrate all my lens.

We bought the 85 Art recently for Canon. We now use the 85 Art on the 5div and the 85GM on the A7rii.
Both are excellent. The Sigma is sharper and focusses faster, it is heavier, too, as can be read on the internet for quite some time already. I prefer the bokeh of the Gmaster. However both are very close. Besides the 35/1.4ii it is the first lens (and first Sigma lens) which didn't require any fine tuning at all distances. Did quite surprise us.
