Don't think Nikon has a TC-17iii yet. Still on version ii.

I think Weasel_Loader is correct. TC-17ii is the latest version of this TC.

There is no 1.7 TC III - in fact there is not even any other 1.7 TC's, so it's kind of funny Nikon Called it the "II" when version "I" never existed. It's about 13 years old now.

Huge difference. One exists and the other doesn't.

First of all, some lenses aren't compatible with the new 1.4 III, so make sure you aren't affected if you're considering that one

The 1.4 II vs III performance difference varies depending on the lens you use it on. It ranges from very noticeable to hardly at all. It makes a bigger difference on the newer long primes compared to older lenses.

Unless there is a significant price difference, or you can't use it on your intended lens, I'd just get the III.

We have been waiting for years on a new TC 1.7x. I don't know why they don't update it.

Because it is not really needed in the digital age. When I shot with ASA 160 film there were times when I need the 1/2 stop gain with the TC17 over the TC20 teleconverter. No such concerns with digital cameras that can easily produce good results at ISO 3200 with 20 time the light sensitivity of film emulsions.

My TC-20 III is a lot sharper than was my TC17 II and so I sold the TC17 and upgraded my TC14 II to the III version. This is one case where the upgrade was clearly beneficial and not a case of pixel peeping.
