What do you think, is there a chance for us to see 105 f/1.8 from Nikon in a year or two?
The 1.4 version gets all the rave, but it is big and expensive.

I have not seen any rumors of a Nikon 105/1.8. Too bad, really - I would buy one in a heartbeat.

I know you guys are more than likely talking AF lenses; but I really love the 105mm f/1.8 ais...its a heck of a lens.

Yes, indeed. I have tried 105 f/2.5 AIS and lived the image quality, but without AF I just could not get anywhere close to the level of reliability with focusing (on D3s + magnifying eyepiece).

I have tried 105 DC f/2. Loved the images around f/2.8, but AF reliability and sharpness at f/2 could use some improvement.

I use and love 50mm primes including Sigma Art, so 85mm is to close to it while 105 is just perfect. But I would love it to be sharp wide open and a bit smaller than Nikon 105 1.4. Since all other Nikon prines with 1.4 version also have 1.8 version I was hoping maybe there will be 1.8 version of 105 as well.

Doubt it.
Still waiting for the 135mm 1.8.

Nikon F2AS, Nikkor 105 1.8 AIS, Portra 400

Nikon 105/1.4 was introduced only recently. I don't think Nikon is going to make cheaper 1.8 version anytime soon.

Sigma 85/1.4 or 135/1.8 are your best bets. Or Zeiss 100/f2 MP if you are OK with no AF.

Based on history - it may emerge in 18 months if Nikon thinks it will make a profit. The 1.4 is staggeringly expensive -- but worth every $. The most likely competitor for now are the 105/2.8 macro or the a Sony Art 105mm/2.8. I'm not sure the is a market for 3 105mm FX lenses in Nikon's portfolio.

It's not just about the price, but the size as well. And Sigmas you named could be larger than Nikon 105 1.4.

I wouldn't expect anything until they have had the 1.4G out for long enough to sell it to most everyone who wants that type of lens - I don't think they will offer a cheaper version until they have milked that for a while. I hope they do though - 1.8G for 1/2 - 1/3 the price and even sharper than the 1.4G (with slightly worse rendering and build quality) if they are following their historical trends.

Sure would be nice. Still no sign of a 58mm f1.8G however.

Fair point - however with 3 versions of the 50mm, and the draw of the 58mm being it's unique rendering, it's more reasonable that they didn't bother with that one.

I would not expect any other versions of 58mm 1.4. Its predicessor was a 1.2 lens that never had a slower version.
The 105 focal length on the other hand had quite a few versions. Therefore I am hoping that in couple years we do see the 1.8 or f2 version. With the reviews of 105 1.4 it is hard to imagine that the shower version will be sharper.

Nikon has the 105mm f/1.4, the 105mm f/2.8 VR macro, and the 105mm f/2.0 DC lens. Why does anyone think that Nikon should produce a fourth 105mm f/1.8 lens for the dozens of people who would buy it.

Because 105 DC is an outdated lens that could use an upgrade. There is no need to introduce the DC feature in the updated version.

But they would probably add VR to the 1.8, removing it from the "cheap" category!

Based on all the other 1.8 primes that were released recently Nikon had no problem asking $700+ for lenses without VR.

On the other hand, if Tamron releases a 105 I have no doubt it will come with VC. Now that said it, I wonder if that will happen sooner.

Highly doubtful as to a 105/1.8. It seems to me that Nikon has run the table with its popular 1.8 prime series. If not, it's unlikely they would want to erode any prospective sales of the 105/1.4 which is an excellent lens and should continue to be a steady sales generator.

That would be OK with me - I've been asking for VR in the 85/105/135 range primes forever. It is the one thing I would gladly pay for because of how much of a difference it makes, at least for me. VR shouldn't add too much to the cost on a 'cheap' lens, especially on a simple design like 85mm - they would probably just use a similar implementation to one of the kit lenses or something.
