p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sacramento Rose Garden - Zeiss & Leica Summicron

I was out between raindrops to check out the new buds at the Sacramento Rose Garden park and was surprised how much it had exploded with roses since I was there maybe six weeks ago when there was nothing blooming at all. Here are some photos, a couple taken with a Zeiss Makro 100mm F/2 ZE and three taken with a Leica Summicron-R 50mm F/2 V1 (circa 1966).

You can tell that they were taken with different lenses because there are some subtle differences in color, shadow, and DOF. Very interesting.

The camera was a Sony A6300 shot on M mode, around 1/400, but the F-stop was anywhere from F-2.5 to F-4.5. Unfortunately because the Sony doesn't take the readings from the Zeiss lens, I don't have the f-stops for the Zeiss; and the Leica is completely manual.

Thanks for looking.

Very nice set of shots. The texture of the roses is beautifully captured.

Thanks Dave. I think this is the difference that Leica and Zeiss lenses make. I've used Canon "L" lenses for years and while the photos were good, they never picked-up the details that I get with these two brands. Leica and Zeiss each have their own unique flavor.

Nice shots. Was this at McKinley Park? I shot the roses there a few years ago but haven't been back despite living only 30min away.

Nice shots Bill! Is this the rose garden by the Vietnam War Memorial on the California State Capitol grounds?

This is an excellent place for roses. They have a huge variety of different types, sizes, and color varieties. It's my favorite "rose garden" and I think it's even much nicer than the U.C. Berkeley rose garden and perhaps even nicer than the roses at the Butchart Gardens in British Columbia, though Butchart is terrific for everything else.

McKinley Park - I've never been to the war memorial, but it's on my lists of places to check out.
