My current kit is 2 canon full frames (5d3 & 6D - Soon to be 2x 5D3) and a 7D2 on semi permanent loan.

Lenses are:

70-200 2.8L IS II
24-105L
16-35 2.8 II L
Canon 100 Macro USM
Sigma 50 Art
I have another 50mm and 70-200 F4 IS L on semi permanent loan

I am mainly a portrait and wedding photographer. I shoot wider than 50mm for approximately 10 percent of my work, if that...Wider than 24mm less than 1%

Im considering dumping the 16-35L to pick up an 85L. Am I crazy?

I mean down the road I could always pick up a rokinon 14 if I am desperate...and eventually ill probably get a 35/24 art....But I am just stuck in this thought process. I CANT DECIDE! Help me!

Then my next thought is... 85L or 85 art?!? Ha!

Drew,

As you are in the wedding/people business, either the 85L or the 85 Art seem to have your name on them. I am in the same boat, just had Canon loan me the 85L, and it is truly special, not sure if the art has the colors or rendering the Canon does, though it appears close.

GL with your choice.

You also might consider the Canon 35mm f2 IS, great lens for the money, and a 35 is good for people/weddings.

Brian

Thanks for the input. I think its time for an 85L. I might get one from Canon on loan (Platinum member) and see how I like it.

I don't think you will miss the 16-35

Note that they are rumored to release a new 85mm lens this year, possibly a 1.4 and possibly with IS

Selling the 16-35 F2.8, and not having either a 35 F1.4 / F2 or a 24-70 F2.8, does not seem like a good idea for a person that shoots weddings - either that, or you truly love 50mm and are able to make it work at weddings.

Typically also, a 70-200 wedding shooter, doesn't get much use out of a 85 - as they have chosen the zoom and 2.8 as their poison.

If anything, I would sell the 24-105 F4, keep the 16-35 F2.8, and pick up a used 35Li for dance floor stuff.

Do you REALLY need the money?

I wouldn't want to be without some sort of wide lens in my arsenal and the 16-35 is a good optic which you already own.

I rarely use the 16-35 - forgot to mention I have a 17-55 2.8 IS for the 7D2. So I do have multiple wide options. I almost never shoot wider than 24. Might pick up a 10-18 for that one shot a month id want SUPER wide for. Im not in love with wide, so i don't think ill miss it.

Ill pick up a 35 art in a few months once I replenish my gear purchase account...now that it's empty!
