There is definitely room to improve upon the 35/2.8 Sony - sharpness at f/2.8, flare, contrast, and sun stars stopped down.

Let's wait and see how this does - competing on price for similar performance or equal price with better performance than the 35/2.8 Sony.

Impressively small and light, it's even smaller than the Sony. AF and general optical performance remain to be seen, but this could be a good alternative for those wanting a small prime. I wouldn't give my Sony up for it as I am skeptical it'll be as good, but more AF lenses in E mount is always a good thing!

$399... too much, used Sony is more attractive unless this has much better IQ... seems unlikely but not impossible...

It's a little close to a used price of the Sony. Which I think most folks would agree a little pricey to buy new.

I think the bigger question is what is holding up Zeiss from delivering the Batis 35 f2. Surely they must see a big market for this lens, got to be bigger than the 135 2.8.

Well if recent rumors are true and Sigma's first FE lens will be a 35mm f1.4 that may not be the best idea. Again, all rumors at this point, but supposedly the this new 35 will be about half the length of the FE35z. Can't imagine a Batis 35 would be significantly smaller or cheaper.

I have my doubts a 35/1.4 with AF will be half the size of the FE 35/1.4 ZA. If it is, we can't expect similar IQ.
Perhaps the new Sigma will be a f/2 or f/1.8.

Sigma is not shy in coming out with largish and quite heavy lenses although I have to admit that the IQ of their Art lenses is superb. Their most recent 135mm f/1.8 Art lens at over 1kg is even heavier than the Sony 135mm f/1.8 Zeiss lens, and the filter diameter of the Sigma is 82mm. Yes, those lenses so far are more based on DSLR system and I hope that they indeed can make those lenses smaller and lighter for the Sony FE mount.

I'm getting this lens, with it on my A7r2 I can almost put them both in my pocket...
And I mostly shoot at f/8 on the streets.

Yeah, I was curious enough to probably grab one at $299, but I am not paying $399 to satisfy my curiosity . . . not for an f/2.8 lens. I suppose it would be fine for street stuff, but that's a small part of what I do. I enjoy blurring the backgrounds too much (e.g., my current 35 solution is a Voigtlander 35/1.2 II).

I personally use 35mm as an environment lens, so shallow DoF from a larger aperture is a secondary concern. My primary concern is sufficient performance in a relatively portable package.

Disappointingly, this lens at first pass seems not to improve much (if any) on the performance aspect current 35mm f2.8, which is frustrating. I wouldn't mind a lens about twice the size if performance was definitively better at the same aperture (or slightly faster).

Like others, it's a missed opportunity from my view as well. Guess I'll have to see if Sigma comes up with something nice, or if a surprise 35mm Batis shows up some day.

I have the Zony 35mm f2.8 which I got for about US$500, and I don't think I'll be trading it for the Samyang.

I'm one of the few that's actually interested in this, though yeah, $399 is a little steep compared to used sonys. But 85 grams?! I'm interested in pairing it with the new 12-24 fe for an ultralight hiking setup; it's either that combo or a voigtlander 10 and zony 16-35.

I got my Zony 35mm f/2.8 for $425, so if one is willing to buy used, not sure this lens makes sense to buy unless it can be bought used at some point for about $250.

Looks like $349 is the final answer...

$349 seems like a reasonable release price, and Samyang tends to have good sales (the 14/2.8 and 50/1.4 are often found for $150 below list). Once it is sub $300 I will probably make the purchase (and after seeing a few reviews).

The same could be said about Voigtlander. They have an excellent 35mm f 1.7 Ultron, yet they chose to modify the stupid 35mm f1.4 classic for Sony E mount.

Samyang seems to always make the wrong calls :/
Like when they first announced their AF lenses and it seems the whole world was waiting for the amazing 135mm with AF and NOPE, they came up with some other lenses instead. Now they seemingly drop the ball again.
Sometimes I wonder who is running some of these companies and their disconnection with what customers want.

I believe 3rd Party lens makers aren't getting full say in what is and what isn't released. Keep in mind Voigtlander in particular is the house brand of Cosina, makers of most of Zeiss' consumer glass including the stuff for E mount. If Sony and/or Zeiss says not to make / release something then they aren't likely to bite the hand that feeds them.

Even with other manufactures, from what I understand the Sony interface is available to third parties, but that doesn't mean Sony is or has to release them without stipulations. It's unfortunate but I really think the reason we have no 35/2 AF lens is because Sony isn't allowing it.

I have yet to get at all interested in buying any e-mount 35mm lens - I have a great 35mm f/2 that happens to have a half-decent camera attached
