How do you gather that? The article said new bodies would be $3599 to include the feature. Are you suggesting they will sell both bodies, one without at $3499 and one with at $3599? Seems unlikely to me.

Yes, that was what I assumed it would be. They currently sell the version without for $3499, so the alternative is a $100 increase in price overall to add a feature useful to a tiny minority. At the end of the video

Canon says you can send in your existing camera to be updated, or buy it with the feature later on, but they don't say cameras bought from now on will get the update free.

I bought the camera as a stills camera. But I also have a family and a toddler, so I want to do videos. The 4K codec and ridiculous crop factor suck. So I had to find something else. I'm with Fuji for videos.

Sorry, but to decry Canon's "ridiculous crop factor" then say you go with Fuji for video in the very next sentence is absolutely hilarious.

How do you figure? To get the same range and FOV I get with the tiny Fuji 18-55mm on the Canon I would need to pair it up with the 16-35 and the 24-70, at substantially larger size and cost. And sure, the Fuji has a crop factor for images and a small crop factor for video. It doesn't change the fact that Canon chose a ridiculous crop factor here to do native resolution rather than supersample from a smaller crop of 6K to 4K like Sony cameras do. With a slightly higher MP count they could record at 8K and resample to 4K for very nice files. But nooo, not Canon.

And yes, take all I say regarding video with a grain of salt. I'm not speaking as to professional usability. Just practical, every day usage.

Oh, what do we have here? Canon 4K video rants!

"Family videos"
"Practical every day usage"
"4K full frame"
"Boo canon for not making small FF f/2.8 zooms ... e.g. like the XF 16-55 f/2.8"

All of this makes me feel a bit less irrational for having a 5DSR and dealing with "yuge" files even for baby stuff...it is the human nature that unfortunatly gets relieved -even a tiny bit - when we find out some people are worse off than we are - at least we are not in the bottom of the barrel, right? - in this case, that some ppl get less rational than I am, and have zero remorse expressing it

Luv the interwebs. Take out the tiny violins for people desperately needing excuses not to buy $3,500 DSLRs.

Good news, get a C300 II for your family videos, use EFS/Sigma DC problem solved.

Boy are we spoiled. If only the people who are complaining actually move to the other brands, maybe Canon will do something about this. But only if they actually do it. Isn't this part of free market?

Well, shit. If after 11 years of being a loyal Canon supporter, and being an early adopter of the 5DIV, I can't voice my displeasure and unsatisfaction with what my preferred camera manufacturer is doing, I guess I'm just going to shut my mouth and stop posting here. Seems one can't voice dissenting opinions without being attacked or mocked because of it.

It is easy to see who are the internet jerks and bullies, and then equally easy to ignore them.

How are people transcoding from mjpeg, on a Windows machine? I know Apple users can use fcpx but that's not available for Windows users....

It will be interesting to see if Canon continues to sell both versions. One with and one without c-log. I would guess once they deplete their supply of non-clog bodies they will just all have it as default. This will eventually create problems with selling non clog bodies on the used market...maybe??

But there is no way I will pay to have mine updated as the 4K is just too much to manage for me with the huge files and crop factor and I rarely do video anyway.

Canon has offered upgrades for a fee previously, such as the model control lock on the 7D. One would assume that there is S/N range for the new bodies with c-logs and a colored dot or such for upgraded bodies.

In this noisy discussion I'm prompted to comment reference remarks about makers not likely to have 2 versions of the same camera model with 2 different price tags simultaneously.

To wit: Nikon had two versions of the D800 almost from the get-go. I have the 'e' version.
Canon itself has the different versions and prices of the 5D.
And to further state the obvious: Most of the 'other guys' are offering 'suffix letter' versions
of their wares, all at once!

I'm not interested at all in video with a still cam. And don't know the 'nitty-gritty' of all this stuff about 4K. But if I was in the frustration of the OP, I'd take the simple suggestion to buy a lens that handled his field-of-view in video use on his 5D. The added boost being that glass can be used for anything else on anything he can hang it on!

dpreview now say that "Canon has clarified" that there is no hardware mod to the camera, and that the old version without C-log will continue to be sold.

The first directly contradicts what Rudy Winston said in the video linked above. Most likely, this is a firmware update to the DSP (digital signal processor, a specialist CPU often found in devices like this). It's rather odd that that firmware can't be updated by users—I have two home cinema appliances that have had updates to the DSP as well as their main firmware.

I'm afraid I think there's no excuse for charging more for the feature on new bodies if it doesn't require additional hardware.

Most likely then that the firmware isn't used to activate this other than to add that option to the video mode. There must be a change to the core OS or algorithms that aren't affected by the firmware. This requires Canon to do the update, and also explains how one firmware update in the future will work on either type of 5d4.
