I compete regularly and anytime there is bright area or hot spot in your image, you will get nailed by the judges and you lose points. The argument is that your eyes get drawn to any bright area or specular highlights - so anytime you have a distracting bright area or hot spot, you need to either clone it, or crop it out, or tone it down. You want to keep the viewer focussed on the "center of interest" and you don't want the eyes to wander off to any other distracting bright area in the image and out of the frame.
