Posted in the general B&W forum as well.

My girlfriends cat, Frida, who's a year old. Not staying still much so I'm taking the time I get to shoot her while she is sleeping. Usually she wakes up and either walks away or starts to play when I bring my camera but this time I got about 20 minutes with her. Got to try and few different angles I haven't done before. Mostly close ups and just pure experimentation.

Yes ... if you are a cat lover, as I am.

Would have been pretty cool if, on the 2nd last cat shot, you had focussed on the cat's paws instead.

Great, impactful image! If it was my image I would crop off the distracting highlights to the left of the image, so the viewer is totally focussed on the ray pattern which is awesome.

Thanks Bobby

Why settle for one type of shot when one can do both? I focused one shot on the face and one on the paw, just to be sure I got what I wanted

He's the paw shot, just for you

A slightly cropped (had a bit too much disturbing blackness in the lower left corner) and one heavily cropped for all us paw lovers out there.

Ha Ha ... good man! I do prefer the paw shot to the eye shot.

Thanks, Bobby. I'll play with it some more, and try cropping as you suggested.

I compete regularly and anytime there is bright area or hot spot in your image, you will get nailed by the judges and you lose points. The argument is that your eyes get drawn to any bright area or specular highlights - so anytime you have a distracting bright area or hot spot, you need to either clone it, or crop it out, or tone it down. You want to keep the viewer focussed on the "center of interest" and you don't want the eyes to wander off to any other distracting bright area in the image and out of the frame.

I compete locally. I am a member of PPLAC (Professional Photographers of Los Angeles County) which is affiliated to PPA (Professional Photographers of America) and they have a photo competition 4x a year. I did pretty well last week with this image. Only criticism from one of the 3 judges was that the 2 wooden panels to the left of the image should be toned down somewhat, so the portrait would pop a little more. The judges dislike anything that is bright as it detracts one's attention from the main subject or center of interest, which is the face of the woman. You learn and improve real fast when you compete regularly.

@bobbytan it's a beautiful shot! Where was i taken and when?

I generally try and stay away from bright spots near the edge of the photo, I don't always succeed but I know bright stuff draws attention. And the point of interest should be the thing that draws attention.

Will see if I can find some photo competitions over here in Sweden.

The Nocticron is just simply amazing in its rendering too

Thanks! That was shot in Bali, Indonesia last year. What you can't avoid during capture you can always try and fix in post. I use the Fill and Content-Aware tool quite a bit to fix/clone parts of the image.

@bobbytan true that, I really haven't used Photoshop much but I'm getting in to it more. I know Lightroom well but there are some things that can't be done there.
