The nesting site which is most promising for photography has been kind of ruined by a plywood platform some well intentioned folks placed there in order to help the birds build their nest, and indeed, there are already two eggs there. Alas, looking at it selfishly, the platform is of really bad appearance, and that means any action in the nest or near it has been ruined for photography now. However, there will be photography opportunities away from the nest, particularly when chicks hatch and start to swim around.

You will have to make the nest platform look nicer off season Peter. Good image

That is a lovely one Peter. Sorry to hear about the non-natural intrusion at the nest. Hopefully the activity away will surpass what the nest area may have offered for you my friend

Last time I was in Toronto, there were probably at least 10 pairs of Red-necked Grebes.
Without a nest platform, the birds don't do much. If you want action images of them fighting or egg drops from another grebe, you need nest platforms.

You did not mention where you were shooting them, Humber or Col. Sam?

Fantastic portrait, Peter!

I feel your pain about the platform; good intentions but such a letdown photographically. I'm sure you're right about the consolation prize but it doesn't change the disappointment about losing that hub of activity.

That said, I still look forward to your pictures from 'off-site'...

Thanks for posting.

From the standpoint of photography, it is best when Rednecks are able to use a natural feature to build their nest on such as in this example from last summer. A fallen tree branch in the water close to the surface served as the nest foundation upon which a Redneck pair built up their nest within a week. That particular nest survived a couple of heavy rain falls/storms and yielded six juvenile grebes by the end of the season. As far as I could tell, they lost no egg nor chicks.
